Simon Wittenberg reports back on how his baby got on with the commemorative edition of the Stokke Tripp Trapp, marking 50 years of the iconic chair.

The Stokke Tripp Trapp® chair has been a global success story since it first came to market half a century ago in 1972, the same year that the Atari computer manufacturer was founded and Don McLean released the famous hit “American Pie”.

Designed by Peter Opsvik, the now 83-year-old Norwegian chair designer and Jazz musician, the Tripp Trapp chair has since won awards and been bought by over 13 million people in 80 countries. It has even earned its place both in the permanent collection at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and in the displays of the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum in London.

To celebrate half a century of the iconic Tripp Trapp, Stokke recently released the 50th Anniversary Edition featuring a commemorative logo, carrying an RRP of £235. In the collection, there are 15,000 individually numbered Limited Editions for the Ash Mixed variant (ours is marked with the number 13,027) and 3,000 numbered examples for the Ash White model. Complementing these is the 50th Anniversary cushion, of which 10,000 pieces have been made available at a cost of £42, and is designed for use without the Baby Set.

One of the big selling points of the Tripp Trapp is that it’s a high-quality piece of furniture offering many years of use as your child grows. This means that it can be in situ from birth (when buying the Newborn Set) all the way up to adulthood, so when your upfront investment is divided by a number of years, it represents excellent value for money.

The Stokke Tripp Trapp arrives in a near triangular-shaped box flat-packed as seven different pieces, alongside a pictorial set of step-by-step instructions and a small box of washers and Allen key bolts (the Allen Key comes with it).

After joining the two sides to the strut going across the bottom (which features the limited edition reference on the back and a warning label on the front), the knack is then to not tighten the screws on either side too tight so that you can then slip in the curved seat and footrest at the desired height. This process will need to be repeated as the child grows.

There are various slots for the different heights on the diagonal frame, so it takes a bit of adjustment to get the right level and also, a few fingers of width need to be left at the back when sliding in the seat and footrest to its final position. Setting this latest Tripp Trapp apart from those that have come before it is the elegant but simple 50th Anniversary moniker, which has been etched into the top of the backrest.

If your little one is not yet sitting upright on their own, the Baby Set, which has an RRP of £52, is available to purchase on the Stokke website and fits Tripp Trapp models dating back to 2013. Made of beige-coloured plastic, it’s easy to fit, as we found out, and clips onto the rear of the backrest, whilst the middle section that sits between the baby’s legs slots into the base of the seat.

Living with the Tripp Trapp has been a success and the way this piece of furniture has been shaped means that the baby can sit quite close to the table, which is handy when feeding. The baby also seems well propped up and comfortable, making it inviting to be in rather than being a battle before the meal starts. With a multitude of food dropped, the Tripp Trapp is also easy to clean and wipe down, which makes it simple to maintain in pristine condition, ready for the next sitting.

The other bonus of buying a Tripp Trapp is that owners will receive a complimentary seven-year warranty when the product is registered.

In summary
The Stokke Limited Edition 50th Anniversary Tripp Trapp has proved a hit in our household and has been a welcomed aid to make mealtimes a much easier exercise. This commemorative edition is a practical and stylish addition to the home, and with a multitude of accessories, plus the added perk of longevity, it’s a thumbs up from us.
