Following the success of its inaugural cask sale in 2023, Ad Gefrin Anglo-Saxon & Whisky Distillery has announced an even more exclusive limited cask release for 2024. The new offering builds upon the popularity of the initial release of ex-Bourbon and ex-Oloroso Sherry casks launched last year, to huge demand.
The three new cask purchase options contain the much-anticipated Ad Gefrin single malt that has aged on-site since distilling began in 2022. The new cask finishes are:
Ex-Sauternes, 225 litre Barrique, priced £6,000
This dessert wine, with notes of peaches, almonds and honey, has recently grown in popularity for finishing whiskies. The casks are untreated, so the resulting whisky will be light in colour but rich in flavour.
Ex-Amarone, 225 litre Barrique, priced £5,750
Amarone is a bold but dry red wine from the Valpolicella region of Italy, produced using a strict recipe. The wine is famous for its aromas and flavours of cherry, fig, cinnamon, brown sugar and almond.
Ex-Cognac, 225 litre Barrique, priced £5,500
Cognac needs no introduction; produced in the west of France where it is distilled from grapes. These casks should give notes of orchard fruits, honey and dried citrus to the whisky.
A new release of ex-Oloroso casks (250-litre Hogshead, priced £6500) and ex-Bourbon casks (200-litre ASB, priced £4800) also remain available for purchase. All casks will remain on-site, maturing over ten years, offering a priceless immersive experience and a unique opportunity for collectors and connoisseurs.
Ben Murphy, Director of Distillery at Ad Gefrin, said, “With our continued offer of small amounts of Bourbon and Sherry casks, we have sourced several interesting casks that we are able to present in even more limited quantities. Casks that, I feel, complement our New Make Spirit but also bring something a bit different.”
Each cask purchase includes 200-250 litres of Ad Gefrin new make spirit (dependent on cask size), filled at 63.5% ABV. Cask owners are welcome to visit their cask annually and engage with the Ad Gefrin distillers.
After the third year of maturation, a 100ml sample will be taken annually. Ten years of storage, under bond and insurance, is factored into the cost, with a certificate of ownership issued and a plaque on the wall at the distillery to display ownership.
What makes Ad Gefrin’s cask ownership so unique is that the opportunity is available exclusively to Corenkyn members. With the founding membership program closing to new members at the end of 2024, this new release presents a limited-time opportunity for locals and whisky enthusiasts alike to join this distinguished Northumbrian community and secure their casks.
Corenkyn, named after the Old English words for ‘chosen’ and ‘family,’ is Ad Gefrin’s founding membership package. Members benefit from lifetime access to the exhibition and distillery tours, plus guest tickets, and a plaque of recognition within the fabric of the building.
In addition to eligibility for cask ownership, membership perks include 8 x 70cl bottles of Ad Gefrin Whisky Spirit – one drawn from each of four annual releases of exclusive Corenkyn Premium Blends or Single Malt (when ready), early-bird access to all of Ad Gefrin’s spirit launches, 20% off at the distillery shop (in person and online) and bistro, bespoke gifts, and special guest status at a calendar of events.
Corenkyn membership costs £2,022 (one-off), with monthly instalment options available. Casks must be paid in full upon purchase.
The new cask release will be available for Corenkyn members to purchase from 2nd August 2024 on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested parties should contact Sharon at [email protected] using ‘Cask Purchase’ in the subject line.
