Campaign Artist: Lawrie Hutcheon
Affordable Art Fair is thrilled to announce that Lawrie Hutcheon’s dreamy lenticular ‘Cumuloform 1’ is the star of Affordable Art Fair Battersea Spring’s campaign. Lawrie is a self-taught, lenticular artist known for his vivid, dream-like artworks.
He often focuses on pieces exploring metaphysical concepts like time and space and enjoys experimenting with colour combinations, saying: “I find playing with colour combinations exceptionally challenging, rewarding, and slightly addictive.” Lawrie is represented by TAG Fine Arts.
New Installation: Alejandro Propato
Alejandro Propato is a sculptor and architect from Argentina, currently based in Buenos Aires. He trained as an architect at the University of Buenos Aires, where he later served as a professor of Architecture from 1995 to 2000.
Propato has since developed his architectural practice and skills for space designing, executing a variety of monumental site-specific installations, often inspired by nature.
He identifies public, urban, and green spaces as powerful sources of inspiration for him, highlighting “the harmony of human beings with nature.” At Affordable Art Fair Battersea Spring, Propato will be unveiling a brand-new installation elevated from the ground, linking with the fair theme ‘Art is in the Air’ and giving visitors a majestic welcome.
International Women’s Day
The Fair’s popular Art After Dark Lates will be returning on Thursday and Friday with a special twist to mark International Women’s Day (8 March).
Championing female artists, the event will spotlight female DJs, and there will be a special exhibition showcasing artwork by female artists, with more details to be unveiled.
The Director’s Cut
Fair Director of Affordable Art Fair UK Hugo Barclay selects his top artists to watch at Battersea Spring, 6 – 10 March 2024:
Hussein Salim (Barnes Collective)
“I’m excited to see the work of Sudanese artist Hussein Salim exhibiting at the Fair for the first time with Barnes Artist Collective. His abstract paintings explore a dialogue between different cultures, using extensive layering motifs to mask or reveal certain elements influenced by his experience of displacement as a refugee.”
Catherine Monmarson (First Contemporary)
“French abstract artist Catherine Monmarson has an innate need to create. She describes her painting as a way to know and understand the world. I love her use of colour and the way the works almost seem moving, unfixed, transient.”
Volker Daniel (Gallery Neuland)
“Part of the German artist collective, Gallery Neuland, Volker Daniel’s close-up photography of toy cars is steeped in childhood nostalgia and reminds me of my own childhood toy cars.”
Allen Jones (John Iddon Fine Art)
“I’ll be looking out for the bright, abstract figurative work of Royal Academician and pioneer of the British pop art movement Allen Jones, showing at Battersea Spring with contemporary British art specialists John Iddon Fine Art.”
Henrietta Dubrey (Livingstone St Ives)
“A fair favourite with collectors, the captivating paintings of Henrietta Dubrey are a must-see at Battersea Spring with Livingstone St Ives gallery. She describes her depictions of female nudes as ‘autobiographical deconstructions and reconstructions of life’ – and this translates to her truly unique forms.”
Rainer Nepita (Dreipunkt Editions)
“I love Rainer’s beautiful etchings exploring the natural world; a recurring motif of hers is falling leaves and plants in various stages of bloom. She’s showing with German gallery Dreipunkt Editions, who specialise in works on paper and are returning to our London fairs after a five-year hiatus.”
Petra Schott (Hancock Gallery)
“Look out for stunning large-scale abstracts by German artist Petra Schott, exhibiting with Hancock Gallery. Her art revolves around states of being, the mind, longing and memory. I find it really captivating.”
Cecilia Charlton (Art Gazette)
“Look out for the innovative work of Cecilia Charlton, showing for the first time at Affordable Art Fair Battersea with Art Gazette. Cecilia Charlton creates technicolour, highly patterned hand-sewn textile works that bring together traditions of painting, craft, abstraction, and folk art.
Though aesthetically abstract, the works’ titles often reveal autobiographical stories, such as issues of mortality, drug use, sexuality, family relationships, and mental health.”
Karima Duchamp (justBEE gallery)
“I discovered Karima Duchamp’s work at our Hamburg fair in 2022. She is a French ceramicist and painter whose work caught my eye immediately. I’m thrilled she will be coming to the UK, represented by JustBEE gallery.”
Hugo Barclay, UK Fair Director & Art Expert, said: “Our spring edition is packed with art from across the globe, coming together in Battersea Park for what is set to be a remarkable week. It’s been a joy to delve into our galleries list. Visitors can expect a high standard of diverse artists and exhibitors!
We continue to champion female artists celebrating International Women’s Day and a new, monumental installation titled ‘Flight’ by Argentinian artist Alejandro Propato, with more details to be announced soon. With such a variety of art on display, there truly is something for everyone.”
