Nostalgia is priceless, and presenting an Airfix model kit that only costs around £12 to a man of a certain age will add layer upon layer of memories to Christmas. Jeremy Webb reflects on the importance of memories at this time of the year.
Many countries owe a colossal debt to Airfix. Over the decades, the company has launched many an engineering career, and today, it is promoting its Starter Kits to budding modellers and to the men who used to build planes, cars and boats when they were children.
Airfix Gift Set or Starter Set will be a big seller this Christmas as the iconic brand wants people to buy a plane, car or boat model for that remarkable man in their life. This year Airfix has launched a competition so that each set purchased through their website enters the buyer into a draw to win an incredible once-in-a-lifetime flight in Britain’s iconic Spitfire aircraft.
Starter Sets
Price: from £11.99
Designed with beginners in mind, whether you like tanks, cars, or planes, Airfix starter sets are the perfect start to your modelling journey. Each kit includes glue, brushes, and paints.
Models available: Red Arrows Hawk, Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vc, Sopwith Camel, Jaguar E-Type, Focke Wulf, Bugatti Chiron, Tiger 1, Sherman Firefly, Mary Rose, Aston Martin, Titanic, Fokker Triplane, Pagani Huayra, WW1 Male Tank, MINI Cooper S, Ford 3 Litre GT
Airfix is celebrating seventy years of production with this competition to win a flight in arguably the most famous aircraft in the world, the Supermarine Spitfire.
Dale Luckhurst, Head of Brand at Airfix, says, “Building Airfix models are a staple childhood memory for so many people worldwide. The Spitfire is a British icon and, as such, is one of our most popular to build.”
He added, “It makes perfect sense for us to offer our customers the chance to bring one of their favourite models to life and win this incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience flight in an actual Spitfire aircraft. Even those who have never considered flying in a Spitfire, as trains, cars or boats are more their passion, cannot deny that a flight will induce one of the highest thrills of their lifetime.”
“The winner of the Airfix prize will fly in a Spitfire TR9 over the English Channel. Enroute, they’ll enjoy the sight of the Spitfire’s famous elliptical wing passing over Britain’s green and pleasant land, and if they elect to try some aerobatics, they’ll marvel at the power, manoeuvrability and grace of this aircraft that is over 75 years old. They will also have the opportunity to touch the controls and fly the aircraft themselves, so it really is an incredible prize.”
Gifting an Airfix set to a child is excellent as it encourages thought processing, dexterity, creativity and pleasure. Giving one to a man over forty will rekindle all that excitement of opening the box on Christmas Day and pushing stuff off the dining table to build the Spitfire, Hurricane or E-type Jaguar by the time you have to go to bed. At the least, you would have wanted to complete it by Boxing day. Then you will enjoy seeing the recipient flying the plane around the room in their hand, making humming noises like a Rolls Royce Merlin engine.
About Airfix
Airfix started in 1939 in London, when Hungarian refugee Nicholas Kove created the company’s first iteration, which was making rubber-inflated toys at the time. Kove was a keen businessman in the years after leaving Hungary, so when it came to choosing a name for his new venture, he combined fixing air into products. Airfix was born!
The oldest UK manufacturer of scale plastic model kits, Airfix, has been producing kits since 1952. Although best known for its iconic aircraft models, the last few years have been a journey of discovery and exploration for the brand in terms of branching out into other products.
Since teaming up with Humbrol, Airfix has focused on arming our modellers with everything they might need to create their little world. The company has succeeded with its plastic figures, buildings, and diorama kits. It has even taken on the challenge of replicating some of history’s most beautiful ships and vehicles, resulting in an incredibly diverse range of products.
