We road-tested Albion’s first-ever women’s range. It’s become a go-to staple in our cycling wardrobe. Here’s why…

British-based cycling brand Albion recently announced its debut women’s range. The performance-led collection was developed following an extensive period, where the brand worked with a team of womenswear developers and expert testers.

The range uses the same premium recycled fabrics as the men’s range but with carefully developed women’s fits and features unique to Albion.

Since lockdown, the number of women taking up cycling has boomed, and it’s great to see another cycling brand proactively designing a range specifically for the female form.

I put a couple of key pieces through their paces in a variety of conditions, clocking up almost 500 kilometres of riding around the south of England and Mallorca. Here’s my verdict.

ABR1 Bib Shorts (£125)
I liked everything about these brilliantly designed bib shorts. Hands down, they’re one of the comfiest sets I’ve tried. I opted for a navy pair – a nice alternative to basic black. Navy works really well with the autumnal shades of the short sleeve jersey. Plus, the shorts felt luxurious against the skin.

The subtle women’s specific chamois pad is designed to offer comfort over longer distances – and it did just that! I felt comfy and supported, even during a multi-day cycling trip.

The leg length is slightly longer than average, and even with short legs like mine at 5’3, I found the extra length flattering. It offers that little bit more coverage.

My favourite part about the bib shorts were the straps. They’re totally seamless and are set wider than any bib shorts I’ve previously tried, which I found to be more comfortable.

The Short Sleeve Jersey (£90)
I love the jersey’s bold colour options, especially the Burnt Orange and Forest Green shades.

The jersey looks as good as it performs. While riding, the fabric felt noticeably thicker and more premium than many other jerseys I’ve tried. It was tight but not too tight, and that allowed for a comfortable ride.

The back three pockets are nice and snug, so there’s no worry of your valuables slipping out. There was also enough room to bring a packable rain jacket which is great because you can never be too sure what the British weather is going to do.

I did question if the jersey could be more breathable. For me, it wouldn’t be suitable for the hottest of summer days. On the other hand, the jersey being slightly thicker means it could be worn into autumn. You wouldn’t have to pack it away for the year quite so soon.

I really rate Albion’s first women’s range. It made every kilometre of riding thoroughly enjoyable.

It’s by no means an extensive range – however, the core pieces champion quality over quantity. Plus, the set has been through the wash a couple of times, and I’ve spotted zero wear so far. Bonus!

The price point is impressive too; I’m used to paying another £30-£50 for pieces of similar quality.

All in all, I’m excited to see what this brand creates next.
