LM: You have built a facility in the south of France to set world records. Tell us more.
AC: Yes, it is a speed stadium called the ‘Volkswagen Transporter Arena’ and is located in Salin-de-Giraud. It was the idea of myself and my father as we knew that the area in which we live is prone to the strong ‘Mistral’ wind. We searched for the ideal venue that would provide a good speed base and negotiated with the owner of the salt reservoir to buy it and subsequently created the Arena. I had my first attempt in November 2012 with Rob Douglas and achieved 53 knots and then in March 2013, I almost beat my personal best with a speed of 54.08. However, my patience paid off and in November last year, I surpassed Rob’s 2010 record by 0.97 knots.
LM: You partnered with Zenith Watches. How did this come about and which timepiece did you wear?
AC: The day after I passed the 100 km/h barrier in 2010 in Namibia, Jean-Frédéric Dufour, the CEO of Zenith Watches, called me and asked me whether I would like to become associated with the luxury Swiss brand. It was an offer I couldn’t refuse and for the next three years, even when I was competing, I wore Zenith’s beautiful flagship ‘El Primero’ Striking Tenth timepiece which has a legendary in-house movement.
LM: You are also sponsored by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. Which one do you own and are there any other VW models that stand out for you?
AC: I currently drive the Multivan ‘Edition 25’ which was launched at the beginning of 2013 to celebrate 25 years of the four motion transmission. I also like the new 269 hp Golf R which has the same engine as the Audi S3. It will probably be my next weekend car!
LM: As an avid car enthusiast, what is your dream luxury car, and what other high-performance models have you driven to date?
AC: It would have to be the Lamborghini Aventador. I really like its aggressive shape and the engine is amazingly powerful. I have also got behind the wheel of the Chevrolet Corvette C6 and the Audi RS4.
LM: Are there are any sports personalities that inspire you today?
AC: Yes, François Gabart, a young French professional offshore yacht racer who is really talented and always sails on the limit.
LM: Thank you for your time Alex and it has been a pleasure to meet you.
