In this article, we take a look at the Angelus U41 Tourbillon. It’s the latest in the Swiss Brand’s range of modern urban creations and is a stylish, minimalist skeleton timepiece, available as a limited edition of just fifty.
I have always been fascinated with watches for as long as I can remember. The dials, movements, even straps appealed to me, especially old pocket watches where you could open the back and see the workings. The Angelus U41 Tourbillon happily reminds me of peering into the workings of one of these pocket watches except the skeleton design allows you to see the movement from the front, integral to the design.
Based in La Chaux-de- Fonds the centre of Horology in Switzerland, Angelus has been operating for 125 years. It is a high-end watchmaker producing everything in house with artisans manufacturing exquisite pieces. Two brothers Albert & Gustav Stolz founded Angelus in 1891 in Le Locle, before it expanded and moved to its current position.
The U41 is constructed within a 42mm Titanium case where the workings are on display through transparent sections. The intricate details that go into piecing together a luxury timepiece captivate and intrigue adding to the beauty of the design.
Angelus see their latest model as a sporty watch, with its Titanium case, sculpted rubber strap and notched bezel. Their aim to have a sturdy watch, yet light and capable of cushioning blows and knocks. To do this, Angelus enclosed all the main workings between two plates. They still managed to keep the 42mm diameter case to just 10mm.
Angelus movements frequently exhibit 90-hour autonomy, enabled by a balance oscillation speed of 3Hz. For the A-300 calibre, the frequency has been set at 4Hz for 60 hours of power reserve. This higher frequency safeguards the accuracy of the movement during impacts, and thus reduces its power reserve.
Two colour versions of the U41 are available, one decorated with blue hues, and another in a striking orange illuminated by flashes of yellow on the minute hand and minute circle. The hours and minutes hands are coated in Super-LumiNova White.
The skeleton look is on-trend, it may not appeal to everyone, but it does to me. The price in Sterling is £27000 which may seem steep, but it is a strictly limited edition with just 25 in orange and 25 in blue. I’m sure the fifty watches available will sell quickly. As good as it looks and even if I had the money, I’m not sure it would make my must-buy list. There are too many great, innovative watches available today.
