Palazzo Previtera, a luxury guest house on the slopes of Mount Etna and a leading centre for contemporary art in Sicily, has announced its artist residence programme for this summer, whereby international artists are invited to stay and create work inspired by Sicily.
Guests staying at the Palazzo can explore the exhibitions and meet with artists at work in an old hazelnut storage barn a three-minute walk away. They can also have breakfast with the artist, take art classes, and participate in family-friendly art history workshops.
The Palazzo in Linguaglossa officially opened last year after ten years of painstaking restoration by descendants of the family that built the house in 1649. It sleeps up to 16 and has a 12-room museum and library, preserving over 500 years of Sicilian history, and a contemporary art gallery in the cellar.
Palazzo Previtera has teamed up with the Sicily Artists in Residence Programme (SARP) to foster a cultural dialogue between Sicily and abroad. The international artists use a wide range of mediums, including tapestry and video. The island and the volcanic landscape of Etna inspire all the exhibitions.
The programme is as follows:
Carolina Mazzolari – 1 to 6 July – Carolina is an Italian textile artist based in London. Her work involves textile manipulation, printing, painting, photography, video and performance.
Ben Cullen Williams – 1 to 22 July – Ben is a London-based artist whose practice consists of sculptures, installations, photography and video. Exhibition opening 27 September 2024
Henrik Placht – 25 July to 25 August – Henrik is a Norwegian artist, painter and printmaker who has assisted artists such as Yoko Ono and Malcolm McLaren.
Other activities available to guests at the Palazzo include climbing Mt Etna, wine tasting in one of the 170 local vineyards, e-biking, hiking and Sicilian cookery classes.
Room prices range from 150 Euros to 400 Euros per night with breakfast. Catania airport is an hour away. You can learn more about Palazzo Previtera at palazzoprevitera.com.
