Wine is one of those drinks that is suitable for just about every summer occasion, but in today’s climate of ever-growing choice, finding the perfect pour can be confusing. To help, Zsofia Kiss, the Head Sommelier of Mayfair’s Greco-Roman restaurant Bacchanalia, has revealed her pick of wines to enjoy during the summer months, alongside tips on which foods go best with them.
With Greece being a prime holiday hotspot this summer, Zsofia reveals it’s also a hotspot for some of the finest wines, unveiling her top choices below:
Fizz never fails: Domaine Karanika, Cuvée Spéciale, Extra Brut
Hailing from Northern Greece, Domaine Karanika is renowned for its commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture. It produces high-quality wines that reflect the region’s unique terroir.
It’s made using a traditional method, using a blend of Assyrtiko and Xinomavro. The crisp, fresh, sparkling notes make it the ideal apéritif.
Its fine bubbles and extra brut style, along with the green apple citrus and white flower aromas, make this sophisticated profile the perfect pairing for a variety of summer dishes – it assists with the likes of highlighting the freshness of seafood, the sweetness of salads and balances the richness of cheeses.
A summer red: Bacchanalia Nemea, Domaine Skouras, Peloponnese
This esteemed red is one of Bacchanalia’s own-label wines. It is made from 100% Agiorgitiko in the ancient region of Nemea in the Peloponnese, home of one of the original sites of the Ancient Summer Olympic Games.
This wine showcases the variety and unique characteristics of the Greek grape variety, hosting rich, fruity flavours with hints of chocolate and cedar.
This wine pairs perfectly with summer classics—it can assist in bringing out the smokiness of grilled meats, balance a hearty pasta dish, and bring out the sweetness of vegetables. This versatile wine can also be enjoyed lightly chilled, perfect for outdoor summer dining.
