On the ground floor terrace, a relaxing seating area has Jim Thompson fabrics covering the cushions while an antique octagonal wooden table of Dutch colonial descent is placed at the entrance and holds a cornucopia of various decorative objects – silver framed old photographs of Chinese and European nobility sit next to Burmese wooden bowls and coral necklaces from Morocco while a huge blue and white porcelain flower pot sprouting luscious ferns take centre stage.
Another terrace on the first floor is for the exclusive use of guests who stays in any of the three suites while a stunning blue and white living room located inside the house is a treasure trove of antiques, books, memorabilia and objects d’art. A modern ink painting by Willy Levy, a Belgium artist living in Bali dominates the wall above the pristine white linen sofa while two built-in shelves which flank the sofa hold a precious collection of blue and white porcelain ginger and temple jars, seashells and Chinese pagodas.
Complimentary continental breakfast and other home-cooked meals are served on the terrace. As a party planner, the owner doesn’t spare any expense on his table decorations, using his own family silver and his collection of 18th-century Chinoiserie china for his dinner service. A bar at the other end of the terrace completes this set-up. Mod cons like free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TV with satellite access, air-con, DVD player and good selection DVDs and CDs are all available.
A 20-metre infinity pool is located on a lower level between the main house and a river. Its hidden location ensures privacy for those guests who wish to be ensconced among nature, the well-manicured garden which surrounds the pool provides a soothing vista and sun loungers are shaded by different specimens of the Artocarpus tree.
Maison Simba was named after a dog, a German Shepherd. “I wanted to name my house in memory of my beloved grandmother whose nickname was Baba and whom I was very close to. But there was a similar sounding villa located nearby so to avoid confusion, I decided to go with Simba.”
