The Benromach Distillery, which is situated on the outskirts of the ancient market town of Forres in Scotland’s Speyside, has unveiled the second annual release of its 40 Year Old single malt whisky.
Already tasting success with a ‘Best in Show’ accolade at the recent 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition – the globe’s largest and most prestigious spirits contest, only 1,000 bottles are on sale worldwide, including on the brand’s website (Benromach.com). The expression carries a recommended retail price of £2,000 (exclusive of local taxes, import duties and shipping).
The 2022 release of Benromach 40 Year Old, the distillery’s oldest annual release, has been bottled at cask strength, and comes with an ABV of 57.6%.
Boasting a natural dark amber hue, this single malt has been laid down in Sherry casks for four decades, with the resulting liquid building on the rich ginger and stewed fruit notes, which featured in Benromach’s first annual batch release of the 40 Year Old. This means that whisky connoisseurs are treated to rich aromas of fragrant cinnamon, ginger spices and Seville oranges. In addition, stewed red berries give way to a hint of roasted hazelnuts.
On the palate, sweet Morello cherry flavours combine with baked apple, liquorice and rich dark chocolate notes, leading to hints of fruitcake and subtle black pepper. The finish is packed full of forest fruit and mature oak aromas.
Each bottle of Benromach 40 Year Old for 2022 is presented in a stunning black-stained solid oak wooden box with copper-coloured detailing and printed metal plaques. The dark amber single malt whisky is housed in a bespoke matt black Benromach bottle, which features a heavily embossed and gold foiled label to complete the quality feel.
Keith Cruickshank, the Distillery Manager, explained that this rare and new 40 Year Old whisky is something truly special, and reflects the nuance and character of the Sherry casks that the expression has been matured in.
