The Benromach distillery in Speyside, located on the outskirts of the town of Forres in Scotland, has revealed one of its rarest single cask releases and the oldest expression in the current range.

The distillery was founded over 100 years ago in 1898, and is today owned by Gordon & MacPhail, which bought it in 1993. The independent bottler revived the production of single malt whisky in 1996, and the business is one of the few of its kind to not use automation in the distilling process. Instead, the Benromach team employs traditional methods, such as sight, sound and touch to create its authentic taste that is revered across the globe.

Rewind back to 1969, the same year as the first moon landing, and a special single malt was laid down in cask no. 2003, an ex-Sherry Hogshead, after being distilled on 11th June. Following five decades of maturing, the result is an exquisite hand-crafted whisky which was bottled on 12th June 2019, and goes by the name of Benromach 50 Years Old.

What’s more, it’s only available from selected retailers as a limited release of 125 individually numbered and beautifully crafted glass 70cl decanters priced at £8,000 each.

Keith Cruickshank, Benromach Distillery Manager, said: “Benromach 50 Years Old is the oldest expression in our current range and was carefully crafted by my predecessors using many of the timeless methods that we still use at Benromach Distillery to this day, with an unwavering focus on sourcing the finest Scottish barley, drawing the purest local spring water and relying on the expertise and senses of our distillers to create a spirit that’s truly handcrafted.

“Benromach is known for its range of classic Speyside single malt Scotch whiskies, beautifully balanced with a light touch of smoke. This old and rare expression exudes undertones of gentle smoke and rewards 50 years of patience and nurture with sweet sherry aromas, ripe fruits and a mellow, mature oak finish.”
