For her first bedroom furniture collection, British designer Bethan Gray has married clean-lined silhouettes, exquisite hand-crafted construction and finishes, and her signature Nizwa and Dhow patterns to create a range of new pieces perfectly in tune with today’s modern lifestyle.
This new collection, a continuing celebration of the tables and cabinetry already within Bethan’s oeuvre, allows the designer to move one step closer to bringing her unique touch to all areas of the contemporary home, which now also includes ceramics, rugs and lighting.
For this new collection, Bethan has translated the distinctive patterning and colour palette of her hugely successful Nizwa and Dhow cabinetry range, first introduced in 2016, into customisable headboards, tallboy chests and bedside cabinets.
It also continues her collaboration with the master craftsman Mohammad Reza Shamsian and his Muscat-based workshop of highly skilled artisans, who masterfully marry ancient marquetry techniques with the latest cutting-edge technology. On her first visit to Oman, visiting Shamsian six years ago, inspiration for both patterns struck Bethan as she explored the majestic centuries-old city.
For Nizwa, the pattern’s rounded geometry idea echoes the castellations of the Omanian Nizwa Fort, and the way sunlight falls across them throughout the day in subtle ombré shades; while Dhow captures the ebb and flow of the local Dhow boats’ striped cloth sails, billowing in the breeze as the traditional sailing boats venture across the Arabian Sea.
“As one big open space, a headboard really makes the most of the pattern, and the metallic overlay really does shine,” enthuses Bethan. Equally, there is a charm in the way both patterns work on the smaller pieces, such as bedside cabinets.
“It has a different movement, where you can almost see the waves of pattern chasing themselves from one side of the piece to the other, lending the pattern a different but equally enticing point of view,” Bethan says.
As each piece is made to order, both the length and width of the wooden base and the pattern of the headboard can be customised to accommodate different mattress sizes and individual bedroom needs.
There are three bedside tables. These are available in combinations of two drawers or one drawer and cupboard; there is also the option for a discreet circular pull-out drawer for storing mobile phones, headphones and jewellery; the tallboy is available in combinations of three or five drawers.
They can also be adapted to accommodate wiring and charging portal needs, and as with all of Bethan’s pieces, solid metal legs complete the collection’s elegant aesthetic.
Available in nine shades of Italian hand-dyed maple veneer (jade green, teal blue, white, charcoal, grey, monochrome black and white, shell pink, and the newest colour option ultramarine), in either solid or ombré shading, with a choice of three metal overlays (nickel, brass or copper), there are multiple bespoke combinations to work perfectly within any space.
