Since the first Fifty Fathoms watch launched in 1953, the world’s oldest watchmaking manufacturer, Blancpain, has built and maintained a close connection with the oceans. To further promote its commitment to protecting the oceans as well as to increase public awareness of the need to preserve this vital resource globally, Blancpain debuted its Ocean Commitment Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, making it the first in South East Asia.
On July 27th 2016, Mr Alain Delamuraz, Vice President and Head of Marketing of Blancpain, Laurent Ballesta and Imran Ahmad, Blancpain Ocean Commitment partners, together with retail partner Cortina Watch, welcomed VIP guests consisting of friends of the brand and watch enthusiasts to the exhibition opening located at the iconic Suria KLCC mall. The opening was followed by an eight-course dinner at NOBU.
The Blancpain Ocean Commitment exhibition was divided into several sections of varying themes, covered by in-depth and detailed introductions:
Birth of A Legend – Visitors were able to discover Blancpain’s connection to the underwater world established more than 60 years ago with the development of the first modern diving watch: the Fifty Fathoms.
Ocean Exploration – Through the Fifty Fathoms, Blancpain developed important relationships with scientists, divers, governmental organizations and other pioneers of the deep water world. From those historical ties, Blancpain has since become a longtime fervent supporter of environmental initiatives to explore, preserve and protect the world’s oceans.
Art in Ocean – This section comprises moving colour photography captured through the lens of world-renowned underwater photographers and friends of Blancpain, enabling visitors to explore the diversity of the oceans and to understand the importance of protecting them. The immersive experience into deep sea wonders adds an emotional connection to this scientifically valuable cause.
The exhibition also featured the latest Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe launched during this year’s Baselworld Show. Blancpain has re-interpreted one of its core timepieces, the three-hand model of the Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe, outfitting it with a deep blue dial evoking the depths of the sea. Adding to its allure, the gray plasma ceramic bezel has been equipped with a blue ceramic insert featuring Liquidmetal® hour markers, an alloy serving to avoid distortions. The case highlights the technology involved in creating grey plasma ceramic, a production method that gives the colour a subtle metallic shade.
At the opening of the exhibition, Mr Alain Delamuraz, Blancpain’s Vice President and Head of Marketing, spoke about Blancpain’s passion and mission to help preserve and protect the oceans by raising public awareness of the underwater world, taking part in scientific research projects and contributing to the protection of the oceans through the creation of marine reserves. He insisted that “Blancpain’s mission in the domain of oceanic environmental initiatives will always focus on long-term projects rather than short-lived and temporary ones.”
Shortly afterwards, Laurent Ballesta gave a presentation in which he shared the challenges faced as well as the discoveries made in exploring the depths of the ocean. Thanking Blancpain, he added “I and my team applaud Blancpain’s sterling efforts in providing the funding required for ocean exploration that ultimately leads to a better understanding of the secrets that lie beneath the ocean. This approach further reinforces Blancpain’s commitment to increase awareness, transmit passion and share in a commitment to help protect the ocean.”
