American watch company Tockr has created ten exceptional skeleton timepieces to celebrate the C-47 WWII aircraft. Each one is also a tribute to the founder’s grandfather, who flew the C-47 in combat.
Aviation and watch technology have been intertwined since the Wright brothers took off, marking the first recorded powered flight. The brothers, as did many observers, timed the duration of the plane in the air. From then on, pilots have put their trust and sometimes life in their watches’ hands, so they only choose brands they can depend on.
Tockr watches’ history is within aviation; the founder Austin Ivey is a pilot, as was his grandfather, who flew in the military during WWII. The American company based in Austin, Texas, commemorates the plane flown by Mr Ivey senior, the Douglas C-47 Skytrain with an exclusive ten-piece model. The C-47 Dark Spirit skeleton is imposing in all black.
The brand first showed a skeleton model in 2020, with their C-47 micro edition selling out within weeks of its launch. The Dark Spirit case takes on a black PVD treatment, offering a dramatic counterpoint to its 5N rose gold coated movement and a gold ring.
Tockr is an independent company self-funded by the founders. They have quickly gained praise from watch enthusiasts and picked up a following from fashion-conscious men.
Inspired by the C-47 aircraft’s radial engine, this became the design blueprint for its first watch collection. Tockr still draws on these experiences and influences to develop collections. The Dark Spirit offers a look at the C-47’s engine with a skeletonized movement and updated stealth-black detailing.
316L black PVD covers the 42mm stainless-steel case giving it the Dark Spirit name. Engraved with its serial number 1 to 10, the Swiss movement can be admired through anti-glare sapphire crystal front and back.
The dial side offers a detailed view of hours, minutes, and central seconds. The reverse presents another view of the automatic winding calibre STP 6-15 H6 and custom skeletonized rotor.
The 5N rose gold coating of the automatic movement and ring offer sleek contrast to the Dark Spirit’s black case and black grid.
More than an engaging design object, this skeletonized timepiece is ready for action, with water-resistance up to 3 ATM and a hearty 44-hour power reserve. Dark Spirit comes delivered with two strap options that complete its dark persona, including a black calfskin strap and an extra black silicone band.
Both straps feature a black PVD coated stainless steel 316L pin buckle engraved with the Tockr logo.
