If you’re in Majorca on Christmas Eve, you’ll have the opportunity to witness a very special event classified by UNESCO as an Asset of Intangible Cultural Interest and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and that is a performance of the traditional Cant de la Sibil·la at the Cathedral of Palma and in the Sanctuary of Lluc.
In the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana Mountain range, the Lluc Monastery is a magical and spiritual place where the Blauets choir learn and sing daily.
The Blauets have an extensive repertoire and go on to world-renowned music careers. In the Blauets’ calendar, there are two special occasions: Matines night (the Misa del Gallo) and Holy Week.
Matines night, which takes place on Christmas Eve, is when the traditional Cant de la Sibil·la is performed, declared an Asset of Intangible Cultural Interest and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
Majorca is one of only two places in the world where the tradition survives, along with the Italian town of Alghero. Although the Sibil·la is performed across most of Majorca, the performances in the Cathedral of Palma and in the Sanctuary of Lluc are the most popular.
A place of pilgrimage and retreat, the Lluc Monastery is the spiritual refuge for many who come to the island in search of peace and spirituality, surrounded by nature. The sanctuary dates back to the 13th century and has since established itself as a unique place on the island.
