If you can tear yourself away from the sybaritic delights of the Spa and hotel, take the train down to Göschenen via the scenic Schöllenen Railway. It celebrates its centenary this year and is a remarkable feat of engineering. Another superb trip is the Glacier Express, its panoramic windows affording splendid mountain views between Zermatt to St Moritz via a stop at Andermatt. You could take a short trip to Chur and return to Andermatt in a day. Or even begin your Swiss holiday with a few nights in St Moritz, followed by a stay at The Chedi Andermatt and then travel on to Zermatt.
The Chedi Andermatt provides guests with many activities including: goat trekking, afternoon tea, bike rental, exclusive slimming and detox retreats (from 5 to 14 nights).
As James Bond fans will know, Andermatt is surrounded by eight breathtaking mountain passes. Follow in 007’s Aston Martin footsteps up the Furka Pass, or take the ancient St Gotthard Pass route across to Italy. The Oberalp road leads to a pristine mountain lake and the only lighthouse in the Alps (marking the source of the Rhine). If you choose the Susten Pass it will take you to the Stein Glacier past deep-green forests, while the Grimsel, Nufenen, Lukmanier and Klausen Passes have alpine pastures, reservoir fishing, Alpine ibexes and Europe’s steepest funicular railway to tempt you.
After a superb breakfast in my suite (outstanding crispy bacon and eggs) I took The Chedi’s Morgan Plus 4 and the Audi R8 Spyder for exciting hairpin action on the Furka, Gotthard and Oberalp Passes. These mountain roads are made for classic and sports cars; I can’t remember having so much fun in a car. I stopped for coffee at the Gotthard Museum and also visited the unique Sasso San Gottard museum – an incredible journey into the heart of the mountain and a former Swiss military installation. The ride on cobblestones down the southern part of the Gotthard Pass towards Italy has incredible views with the villages of Airolo, Giornico or Bellinzona ideal rest stops.
The Chedi Andermatt personifies the luxury hotel-spa experience: Exquisite interior design, superb service and spa amenities, plus an unbeatable location with some of the best driving, hiking and skiing in Switzerland.
