Leanne Kelsall visits top London salon, FOUR, to review their hair extension service – the latest trend loved by the A-listers.
A new beauty trend is emerging among the A-listers; hair extensions. And while there’s no denying extensions once had a bad reputation, they’ve come a long way thanks to new technologies. From Kim Kardashian to Ellie Goulding, celebrities everywhere are turning to extensions to naturally transform their look.
Applied by an expert, you needn’t worry about them doing damage. In fact, extensions could give you flawless tresses without anyone knowing they’re there.
That’s because, as well as for length, celebrities are getting extensions for volume and thickness (Bake Off queen Mary Berry is the latest to take the plunge) and you can even get them for bangs or bold strands of colour.
So following in the footsteps of my favourite celebs, I decided to give head-turning hair a try. I wanted to see exactly how extensions have changed since their former hair-raising days.
After doing my research, I headed to probably the best place in the capital to get them; FOUR London. A prestigious Mayfair salon with a long list of A-list fans.
So here’s how it went, plus, everything you need to know if you’re considering extensions too.

Before we begin, here’s a little bit about the salon…
Launched six years ago, FOUR London is the brainchild of four renowned colourists; Brooke Bohan, Maleeka Robb, Charlie Double and Denise Arnold.
These colour geniuses are so sought after that they’d accrued a lengthy waiting list before even opening their salon doors. (No wonder, with 45 years’ global experience between them.)
Carol Vorderman, Claudia Winkleman, Sir David Jason and Nigella Lawson are all big fans. As well as countless models, royals, fashion designers and socialites.
There’s a Private Room for high-profile clients and an in-house caterer for fresh smoothies, salads and anything else you fancy.
FOUR is set in affluent Mayfair. It oozes top-to-toe glamour, with floor-to-ceiling windows, a striking monochrome colour scheme and fresh bouquets everywhere you look.
You’ll feel like a VIP the minute you enter through the two-story-high doors. The stylists are dedicated to making their clients feel at ease, which is so important if you’re making a drastic colour or style change. Such attentive, unreservedly friendly service, I’ve found, is hard to come by in London. FOUR have got it spot on.
Great Lengths Extensions
FOUR London uses premium brand Great Lengths for their extensions. They’re specially designed to give you longer (or thicker) hair whilst protecting what’s underneath. Great Lengths uses ethically sourced, 100% human hair from an Indian temple. (Be sure to check where the hair’s sourced from when considering extensions.)
They’re suitable for all ages and can help to transform thinning hair, as well as add length. You can choose taped or bonded extensions but your FOUR stylists will help you make the right choice for your hair type and lifestyle.
If like me, you choose permanent keratin bonds, they’ll be attached to your own hair piece by piece – more on this below. The keratin is designed to stick to itself and not to your own hair. It’s sealed to create a sleeve for the natural hair to fit safely inside, meaning your locks can grow freely with no damage.
