Designer Tristan Lohner has reinvigorated an object that just about everyone will recognise. In collaboration with the furniture company Fermob, the designer has brought a fresh, sleek and contemporary take to an oft-overlooked item of furniture, which has resulted in the STUDIE chair.

Many readers will probably remember the days sitting on a hard, coloured plastic chair at school, and some will even remember sitting on a chair seat made from wood. Designer Tristan Lohner and Fermob felt an overhaul was necessary, and they have come together to create the STUDIE Chair.

Although visually different in its looks and comfort levels, the STUDIE is still a product that will bring back childhood memories. The chairs are minimalist and hard-wearing and lightweight, thanks to their 100% aluminium frames.

In addition to this, no more will you be reminded of the sounds of screeching chair legs being dragged across the floor as the STUDIE chairs have silencing pads making them far easier on the ears.

Although this new chair by Tristan and Fermob is somewhat similar in its looks to a school chair, it is far more than it would appear and is ideal for multiple uses, including garden dining or creating a minimalist look inside one’s home.

Considerable thought has gone into this chair. The STUDIE boasts comfortable curved seats that hug the body’s curves, and the chairs can be stacked, making them easier to store in the home.

The many design features imparted into the chair by the company and Tristan is an excellent example of the two’s renowned attention to detail.

With minimalism being the vogue in these current times, the Studie chair offers an endless list of practical possibilities. And who knows? Fermob might’ve created a product that will become just as iconic as the Luxembourg or Bistro chairs, for which the brand is well-known.

About Tristan Lohner
Tristan’s career began when he obtained a certificate in cabinetmaking whilst working under Bernard Daude, who in turn was the cabinetmaker for the Mobilier National and Pierre Paulin. He then attended Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, studying product design, which led to a position at the RBC Group, whose furniture showrooms were designed by luminaries such as Jean-Marie Massaud, Philippe Starck, and Antonio Citterio.

Today, Tristan is the director of the RBC Design Centre, a 2,500 sqm Jean Nouvel designed concept store devoted to design. From here, he continues to practice design and heads up global development projects for high-end hotels and residences.

About Fermob
Fernob is the envy of many companies worldwide. Why? Well, for more than three decades, the company has maintained consecutive growth and profit, and in 2021, its turnover exceeded 100 million euros, with half of its sales being generated in the export market.

The company originally made its name by creating and manufacturing colourful tables and chairs, which has expanded into outdoor furniture, lighting solutions and decorative accessories. The company is based near Lyon in France and operates with a team of almost 300 people. From their headquarters, they design products for both individuals and the professional sector, becoming specialists in the garden, terraces and the furnishing of public spaces.

Fermob doesn’t only rely on its in-house expertise; it also draws upon the skills of other companies. For example, they work with Vlaemynck, who specialise in outdoor textile making and whose products are at some of the most prestigious hotels in France. Given the company’s excellent reputation, we feel confident in saying that their STUDIE chair will live up to all expectations.
