One Page at a Time – Ong Chin Huat admires the Stunning Creations of Jewellery Designer Tayma Page Allies
Former PR supremo Tayma Page Allies fell into jewellery design by sheer accident. She arrived in Hong Kong from the UK and started working in public relations before her true calling beckoned her – that of jewellery design. At a time when serious jewellery pieces only consisted of precious stones like diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds, she introduced stunning coloured semi-precious stones like Rubellite tourmaline, watermelon tourmaline, Paraiba tourmaline and Spessartite Mandarin Garnets.
The Tayma Fine jewellery boutique located at the prestigious Prince’s Building opposite the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and counts other brands such as Van Cleef and Arpels, Bulgari and Cartier as neighbours. Being talented and detail orientated, Tayma personally sourced each and every gemstone she uses on her own, ensuring her customers of its provenance with an independent gemological certificate for each one.
“My favourite clients are professional women who treat themselves to a gift of jewellery to celebrate a bonus, a milestone, a new job or a personal anniversary. They go to a party wearing their TAYMA piece which starts a conversation, which leads to a relationship, which leads to an engagement, they become more interesting as their style and taste is admired. It’s happened many times that TAYMA jewellery has changed someone’s life.”
A perfectionist to the core, each Tayma design is unique and she says is not uncommon for her to remake a ring a few times until she is perfectly satisfied with it. She’s inspired by everything around her and she incorporates Asian influences in her work. “I’m constantly inspired by Hong Kong’s ever-changing skyscrapers and vibrant cityscape” – as evidenced in her collections with titles like ‘Dum Sum’; ‘Mahjong Tourmalines’; ‘Cobweb’; ‘Mandarin’; ‘Passion’; ‘Celebration’; ‘Magic’..… as well as perennial favourites such as ‘Birthstone’ birthday and anniversary celebrations.
For TAYMA’s loyal clientele, nothing is too much trouble: “A man rang the other day from China: it was his wife’s birthday the next day and she was in Thailand. He wanted to choose a gift, send his friend to the shop in HK to pick up the jewellery and his friend would fly to Thailand and meet the husband there. We looked at our records, saw what he had purchased for her in 2008 and knew exactly what his wife would like – then we emailed five suggestions, and he selected one and within 24 hours his wife had lovely opal and diamond earrings from TAYMA for her birthday in Phuket!
For her latest collection, Tayma was inspired by a pair of Roman hoop earrings which she bought from an archaeologist in York, England. Called ‘Mixology’, the collection features an interchangeable medallion-shaped laurel leaf mixer with a concealed link connecting the hoop, mixer and drop. With a nod to the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar and his victory wreath, the mixer and drop of the earrings are detachable so the combination allows casual day chic into cocktail-hour glamour and formal evening drama. This collection encourages the confident and contemporary woman to choose from a variety of elegant looks depending on the occasion and her mood.
