July 4th is the day the hospitality industry has been eagerly awaiting. One establishment that should be a shoo-in for a visit is The Garden at The Berkeley, a brand-new Mediterranean terrace pop up at one of London’s finest hotels.
The Garden at The Berkeley Garden is an intimate and informal Mediterranean-style alfresco restaurant, positioned on Wilton Place on a terrace at the side of the hotel with views of neighbouring St Paul’s church. Lit with lanterns, festoon lights and candles, this outdoor dining spot is lined with olive trees and lavender, reminiscent of the balmy nights of European escapes.
The Garden at The Berkeley offers a daily changing menu served as sharing plates in convivial eating style – the antidote to lockdown living and perfect summertime dining. Guests are welcomed with warm sourdough with confit garlic and charred vine tomatoes – a signature touch.
Dishes include giant charred prawns; T-bone steak with smoked shallot butter and chimichurri; grilled sardines with lemon and rock salt; and roast cauliflower with smoked almond puree. Charred octopus with lemon and garlic saffron aioli; and grilled rack of lamb also feature on the menu – all cooked outside on Green Egg barbeques. The terrace is laid with socially distanced tables for two to six people.
The drinks list includes garden pitchers – ‘The Berkeley Cup’ is a blend of rum, Pimm’s, cassis and ginger beer finished with cucumber and strawberries; whilst ‘Peach Wine’ is a delicious mix of rosé, peach and elderflower liqueur with lime. The Garden is overlooked by The Berkeley Bar with its intimate terrace, which is open to guests, serving classic cocktails and fine wines – the perfect pre or post-dinner drink.
Commenting on the unveil, Knut Wylde, The Berkeley’s General Manager, said, “The Garden at The Berkeley gives Londoners exactly what they have been longing for after months of lockdown and cooking at home – simple and delicious food, a relaxed style of service and a magical setting that we hope transports you to European summer evenings. And, dare I say, a little glimmer of normality.”
The Garden at The Berkeley is open Monday to Friday 6 – 10 pm and Saturday and Sunday 12noon – 10 pm. Last seating is at 9 pm. Booking is available for the first sitting, followed by walk-ins only. The restaurant has 32 covers per seating.
