I didn’t need the yoga nidra to fall asleep, I pretty much dozed off the minute the therapist massaged my whole body from head-to-toe. The scalp was next and I imagined my stresses vanish with the circular motions of her hands. And then the much-anticipated yoga nidra.
Tandeka’s calming voice asked me not to fall asleep throughout the meditation. And even though I struggled to stay awake, her voice penetrated deep into my psyche which instilled a sense of internal peace. I felt relaxed and rejuvenated yet very much present. It’s one of the most beautiful treatments I have had.
To wake me up again, I headed to the hotel’s Northall restaurant to nourish my body (and brain) with their special brain power menu carefully devised by the chef. So as I sipped on a brain power mocktail called Serotonin Sling made of blackberries, blueberries, date syrup, coconut water and almond milk, I flicked through the starter, main and dessert.
I was surprised to see meat and fish on the menu as I had imagined it to be plant based as often is the case when on a health kick or detox. Dr Swart told me it was because certain foods including fish are incredibly good for the brain. As it turned out the raw kale salad with beetroot, carrots, quinoa, Parmesan chips and raspberry dressing, followed by walnut crusted baked mackerel with avocado and monkfish liver toast were incredibly good for my taste buds too. Although already full, I still made room for the coconut tapioca with papaya and lemon balm. It rounded the meal off nicely.
Sadly I only got a snapshot of the treatment, as I headed home after my meal. But the package is completed with a good night’s sleep in a darkened room smelling of lavender and a nightcap in the form of warm milk with Manuka honey and ground turmeric.
I may have missed out on part of the treatment, but guests can take advantage of this package until the end of the year. Some of the loyal guests can also have a one-to-one with Dr Swart to discuss how to achieve peak brain performance and focus on brain-body connection. And the staff are not forgotten either.
A team of 40-strong staff will keep a personal food diary, an evaluation of their work/home life balance, brain profile survey, blood test and wear a heart rate variability monitor. After all, when the staff are in a happier workplace, it’s the guests who will benefit. Because ensuring optimum, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health helps maintain a positive outlook on life.
