As we fast approach the festive season, Simon Wittenberg takes a look at the last expression to be released this year in Glen Moray’s new-look Warehouse 1 Collection.
Following on from the unveiling of the 2005 Tokaji Finish expression in June, and the 1998 Barolo Finish in October, Glen Moray, the Elgin-based distillery in Scotland, has announced the launch of the latest addition to its Warehouse 1 Collection.
Named the 2008 Manzanilla Finish, it is exclusive to the UK market, is bottled at 54.6% ABV, and is non-chill filtered. Furthermore, this expression is limited to just 1,240 cask-strength bottles.
Manzanilla is the driest of all sherries, and is made in the bodegas of Sanlúcar de Barrameda in the Spanish city of Cádiz. Because the unique coastal conditions have a dramatic effect on the flora, thanks to the spirit being produced along the sea estuary of the Guadalquivir river, Manzanilla sherry has a slight sea-salt-esque taste.
This has then combined with Glen Moray’s spirit’s soft Spey water to deliver a whiskey boasting a pale gold colour that boasts a nose of sweet ripe pears, green apples, and freshly cut grass.
Those savouring the Glen Moray Warehouse 1 2008 Manzanilla Finish will enjoy a taste of clean fruit, which gives way to drier oak spice, before encountering a long, lingering and savoury note.
Iain Allen, Glen Moray’s Brand Ambassador, explained their Speyside home is so much a part of the Glen Moray story and that he is pleased that the distillery is closing what has been an exceptional year with the launch of the latest expression. Iain also said they are already well ahead in their planning for the release of their 2022 whiskies.
