Simon Wittenberg takes a look at the latest release from the distillery located in the town of Rothes in the heart of the Speyside region of Scotland.

The history of The Glenrothes whisky distillery goes back to 1878. Fast forward nearly 150 years, and the brand, which is today owned by Edrington, has launched “The 42”. This is the first 42-year-old to be unveiled by Glenrothes, a limited-release single malt whisky that has been inspired by the colour and character of the distillery’s home in the Highlands of Scotland.

This expression (43% ABV) is the result of a marriage of four hand-selected casks of The Glenrothes single malt that have matured for more than 40 years on The Glenrothes Estate.

Master Whisky Maker Laura Rampling chose the spirit from the four barrels that she deemed to have reached a pinnacle of flavour.

The 42 boasts a natural cask-derived colour with no additives, and delivers sun-ripened apricots, orange peel, sugared almonds, and notes of coriander seed and nutmeg on the nose.

This is complemented by hints of brown sugar, honeycomb, vanilla and distinctive orange oil on the palate. Those lucky enough to try this whisky will then be treated to a gentle lingering fragrance to finish.

Each 700ml bottle is housed in colourful contoured packaging that depicts the changing colours of the beautiful Rothes landscape. The Glenrothes’ Brand Director Kerr Arthur explained that The Glenrothes 42 captures a true moment in time that celebrates generations of excellence, honours patience, and evokes the vitality of Rothes.

Just 1,134 bottles of The 42 are available for sale worldwide priced at £6,750 each, and with such a limited quantity, this will no doubt be a highly-prized whisky amongst collectors and aficionados alike.
