Parked outside Les Trois Rois is a psychedelic Bentley – the result of an art project with Basel schoolchildren who have transformed the hotel’s guest limousine with spray paints.
The result is not to everyone’s taste (as a die-hard Bentley fan I found it somewhat alarming) but the fluoro design is certainly a talking point and great publicity for the hotel.
Two restaurants you must visit during your stay in Basel are the Volkshaus Bar and Brasserie and Chez Donati. Redesigned by Herzog & de Meuron, the Volkshaus French brasserie and classic bar, with a courtyard beer garden, has live music, gallery space and superb food under the creative helm of head chef Benjamin Mohr. The Wiener Schnitzel and Steak Frites were especially delicious and the wine list reflects Swiss and well as German and French varieties.
Chez Donati, owned by Les Trois Rois, serves genuine Piedmont cuisine and has the atmosphere of a Belle Epoque dining room. Its 13 Gault Millau points are very well deserved: superb antipasti, Gnocchi alla modenese and a fine Filet de veau «Marie Stuart», with sauce perigourdine was one of my highlights. A mesmerising dessert trolley the piece de résistance: floating islands, tiramisu, zabaione and more. Fortunately, the well-equipped gym at Les Trois Rois enabled me to work off my significant Basel indulgences
the food in Switzerland is irresistible.
