Charles Worthington’s Head of Colour, Katie Hale, reveals the need-to-know hair colour trends for 2020 and treats our tresses to some TLC at the flagship salon.
With spring just around the corner, many of us are thinking about making a bold colour change for the warmer months ahead.
A new decade brings with it fresh new ways to colour your hair. So we asked top Charles Worthington colourist Katie Hale what’s looking popular in 2020.
Spoiler alert: soft blondes, glossy brunettes, punchy reds and smoky ash hues are all set to be big.
I was also lucky enough to have a much-needed colour update from Katie herself at the swoon-worthy Charles Worthington Percy Street salon. Keep scrolling to see the results.
Understated highlights
According to Katie, wearable shades like golden blonde and soft highlights will remain popular as they’re easy to maintain and perfect for those who don’t want to go too bold.
Caramels and smoky gold
Katie suggests adding moodier caramel hues for multidimensional depth, volume and texture to give hair a lift in a subtle but noticeable way.
Another popular ask is smoky gold, which combines cool and warm tones together and compliments every skin tone. It’s also great for blondes and brunettes.
Rich mahogany
If you’re looking to go to the dark side, rich mahogany is one answer. Katie says those who want less commitment should choose cinnamon and hazel tones, which are both a great way to introduce a little colour to your locks.
Balayage and ‘smudged out’ roots
Balayage is a trend that’s here to stay. When it comes to balayaged brunettes with light blonde ends, go for warmer, richer reflects to achieve a more natural-looking balayage.
Brunettes looking for an easily maintainable style will want to try ‘smudged out’ roots, which give an effortless look with an edge.
About the salon
Charles Worthington is a household name when it comes to hair. The brand’s been around for over 30 years, hosted too many celebrity faces to name and is home to the country’s top colourists, including Katie Hale.
I booked into the gorgeous Percy Street salon (think mirrored surfaces, marble walls and crushed velvet armchairs), giving poor Katie the tough job of updating my unloved, grown-out balayage highlights.
She greeted me at the front desk with a beaming smile and led me downstairs to the cutting-edge ‘Colour Zone’. Every colourist has its own station to work at, with plenty of space on either side.
I was running a little late, so Katie had to work fast – that didn’t phase her one bit.
Before I knew it, she’d been armed with glossy magazines, pink bubbly and the scrummiest homemade shortbread biscuits and was eager to hear my colour aspirations.
Her expertise shone through from the start as she delved into my hair’s colour history.
At Charles Worthington, no colour is by the book. As Head of Colour, Katie places huge importance on bespoke colour to suit clients’ skin tone and regime, so the consultation is never rushed.
Somehow, through my mumblings and some Google images I’d liked, Katie was able to interpret exactly how I wanted my hair colour to look, and completely transformed my tresses in a couple of hours.
She was amazingly precise with the colour, masterfully painting the balayage using tools and techniques honed over the years and a few of her own insider hacks.
Thanks to Katie, I left the salon with healthy-looking, spring-ready hair and a spring in my step too.
