It’s a nice move as having to choose one dish out of the myriad of marvellous choices drove me spare during my last visit to the restaurant. Regulars to the Michelin Star restaurant need not fear, however, the changes aren’t too overbearing. Old favourites, such as the Scotch egg, remain for the time-being and will make frequent appearances on a menu that will change monthly.
During my visit to view the renovation I indulged in the six-course taster menu and, I can say with little hesitation, it was sublime. In my last article regarding the Hinds Head, I promised to never mention a Scotch egg so frequently again. I’m happy to break that promise, so earnestly made, to note that I was delighted to see the iconic favourite, alongside the equally tantalising pea and ham broth, wheeled out for the first course.
I stand by my view that the magic of the Hinds Head is the elevation of the mundane into the magical and the new dishes do not disappoint. Heston’s triple cooked chips alongside steak was a particularly fitting dish for the decor and made me a very happy hack indeed.
The dessert courses were equally tantalising with the chocolate millionaires shortbread complemented by a hot chocolate wine, a particular triumph. The same holds true for a delicious doughnut dish, which saw a triad of eclectically crafted doughnuts plated beautifully and eaten unceremoniously quickly.
Such dishes demonstrate the intricate ingenuity that the Fat Duck Group can display on a single plate and, if I were you, I would go out of my way to visit Bray. Once there, The Hinds Head should certainly be on your list, whether it’s for a classy cocktail in the country or the full blown six-course menu, there’s something to delight everyone.
