Skincare expert, founder and CEO of Absolute Collagen, Maxine Laceby has collated some top tips for banishing lockdown skin, and getting the natural healthy glow, our makeup-free skin deserves.
Hydrate!
Let’s start with the basics. Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and it’s mostly made up of water. Without water, your skin can’t function at its best.
Lockdown has knocked us all out of our usual daily routines, and I’ve definitely been finding it harder to remember to drink my two litres a day, but it’s a must-have for healthy skin. If your skin doesn’t get enough water, it’ll eventually become dry, tight, and flaky.
Dehydration is one of the biggest visible differences for your skin, so even if you’re someone who is used to religiously drinking two litres a day, just check in with yourself and make sure you’re managing this in your new lockdown routine too.
The Great Outdoors
It’s great that the restrictions on exercise are starting to ease, one thing the lockdown has taught us is we’ll never take the outside world for granted again! And our skin won’t either. Fresh air is a tired complexion’s best friend, so try and make sure you get outside for exercise every day if you can.
If you’re not able to get outside, you can help to bring fresh air inside by opening a window to allow the air to circulate. I know the weather is changing by the minute at the moment, but try and limit the use of central heating where possible – high temperatures and low humidity are likely to be sapping the moisture out of your skin.
Light, Camera, Action!
Let’s talk about light – specifically, UVA and UVB rays. Most people know the sun emits these rays, and that they are harmful to skin both in the short term, making skin burn and peel if exposed for too long, and in the long term, leaving us more prone to wrinkles and even skin cancer.
However, what many people don’t know is that indoor lights, fluorescent and halogen, also emit low levels of UVA light which can be bad for your skin. So, if you’re skipping the SPF stage of your skincare routine because you’re spending more time indoors, don’t! Your skin will thank you for it.
Be Brave
As tough as the lockdown may be on our skin, it could also be a great opportunity to try something new with your beauty routine, whether it’s experimenting with exfoliating acids and retinol, or simply trying a new moisturiser. Just be mindful that it may take time for your skin to become accustomed to a new product before you see the positive effects in the long run.
I’d always recommend testing a new skincare regime on a small area first, and of course, discontinue use if any irritation occurs. Remember, everyone’s skin is different, so find something that works for you.
Vitamin Me!
Vitamins contribute to healthy skin function, so it may be that a dull complexion needs an extra boost of these while it’s seeing less natural sunlight and eating different foods.
Supplements such as Collagen can also help boost your skin’s natural glow. As we age, our collagen supply naturally depletes (we lose half of our natural Collagen by the age of 50) resulting in tired, dull-looking skin, which is prone to wrinkles.
Absolute Collagen is a liquid marine collagen supplement which is infused with vitamin C to enhance skin rejuvenation and tissue renewal, so a great way to help you achieve glowing skin and both healthier and faster-growing hair and nails, even during the lockdown.
