Stop 5: Gullfoss waterfall
Winding our way back down the glacier, and reacquainting ourselves with tarmac and “normal” tyre pressures, the final stop on the tour was the Gullfoss waterfall (meaning “Golden Falls”). Located in the canyon of the Hvítá river, the source of the huge flow lies upstream to meltwater from the Langjökull glacier, about 35 km (21 miles) away, which we had only just visited.
With the sun starting to set, creating an even more spectacular vista, the power of the water, as it drops down twice over a distance of 32 metres, is utterly immense and almost captivating. After marvelling at the incomprehensible power of the waterfall for several minutes, all that was left, was the one and a half hour journey back to the urban confines of our hotel in Reykjavik.
Entertained by some of Bessi’s fondest childhood memories and how to attempt to confidently pronounce some extremely long Icelandic words, like the name of the famous volcano “Eyjafjallajökull”, (similar in sound to “I forgot my yoghurt”), it was time to say goodbye to Bessi and Cami after a truly wonderful 10 hours in their company, and surpassing both of our expectations.
Summary
Bessi is a man who goes the extra mile to make your adventure as memorable as possible. With an encyclopaedic knowledge of the area, combined with a fun, caring and approachable nature, this really is the ultimate way to see the very best of the Golden Circle and beyond. From what we experienced first-hand, it is no wonder that Moonwalker’s TripAdvisor profile is packed full of glowing testimonials and visitors singing his praises.
We can’t wait to return to Iceland, and one thing’s for sure, is that we will be embarking on yet another exciting adventure.
