For this interview, we talk to Lawrence Tee, one of the visionaries behind Desire which is regarded as one of the most-happening hang-outs in Kuala Lumpur.
Hello Lawrence and thanks for taking the time out to talk to us. I have spoken to a lot of people that have been to Desire in Kuala Lumpur and had a great time, hence us asking you to give us your own thoughts on the club and the inspiration behind it.
First things first, when did Desire Club open?
Lawrence Tee: We opened doors for the first time on the 2nd of July 2010, somewhat bout 6 pm, haha. We officially launched on the 5th of August 2010.
Tell us about Desire club, the inspiration/style and what sector of the market you are targetting
Lawrence Tee: My partners and I are party people. We love to party, we love to drink and we love good music. We wanted a single venue where you could get ‘desireable food’, ‘desireble’ drink, ‘desireble’ music, and most importantly ‘desireble people’ (mainly the women), so what better name to suit the venue than DESIRE itself! The design is minimalistic with a very strong industrial facade. Inside is a blend of plush velvet walls and comfy sofas.
What type of music do you play at Desire club and do you have a resident or guest DJs?
Lawrence Tee: Desire is mainly an R&B and commercial music venue. Open 7 days a week. With DJ’s Fingerstorm & DJ Smurf on Sundays and Mondays, DJ Musher on Tuesday, DJ Adam Cooper (UK) on Wednesday, DJ Rekha Lekha and DJ Too Tithe on Thursday, DJ Nitro (Kuwait) and DJ Jordan on Fridays and DJ Mario Mushroom on Saturdays. Each night is themed Dirty Desire on Wednesdays, Chocolate on Thursday, Playhouse on Fridays and Sultry Scarlett on Saturdays.
Explain to us the layout of Desire club
Lawrence Tee: The clubs main focal point is the extra-large DJ console ( or in this case – DJ Room ), 4 huge VIP booths which fit 15 people each, a separate VIP room which can accommodate up to 80-100 people for private events and parties
What sort of refreshments is available at Desire Club?
Lawrence Tee: We practically have everything you need to party the night away!
Is there any dress code?
Lawrence: Desire has a no caps and shorts policy. Entry is subject to the dress code. Guys strictly in collared shirts and gals… no slippers and sandals, please.
What motivated you to create high-end clubs?
Lawrence Tee: I was bored. and decided the people needed somewhere new to go. Cheers!
How many clubs do you have now and are there any plans to increase on this?
Lawrence Tee: currently we have 2 clubs ( Desire & Quinte), apart from that we have a smaller bar in Hartamas (Hi Spiritz) plans are in the process for global takeover!
Thanks for taking the time to talk to us, is there anything else you would like to add?
Lawrence Tee: We don’t bite!
