Fancy a travel adventure with a unique twist this year? Jopikgården lodge on the island of Hindersön is somewhere you can only drive to in winter – when the sea freezes over.
There are not many roads that take you out over the sea, without a bridge. However, this winter a new lodge is opening where you drive out 12km over on an ICE road on the sea, to an island lodge for an action-packed Arctic Adventure.
Located off the Swedish mainland in the Bay of Bothnia, the island of Hindersön is home to a charming new four-room Jopikgården lodge which is opening its doors to guests this December.
Not only is it the idyllic, secluded private wilderness setting that will draw guests, but the guest’s arrival is over an 8 km stretch of ice road, which takes visitors over the sea to the island.
“Whether self-driving or as part of a transfer, driving over the sea ice is a great way to arrive,” says Shane Doolin, co-owner of the new Jopikgården lodge.
“The journey out to the island really gives you a sense of getting away from the world, so that you can be close to nature and enjoy the peace and stunning winter scenery, that makes our island such a special place to experience.”
With new direct flights to Lulea scheduled, including a new route from London starting on 18/12, the island is a perfect and convenient destination, just a 40-minute drive from the airport.
Once settled into the lodge, a full range of personally guided activities including snowshoeing & fire-making; dog sledging; outdoor dinner experiences, trips to the pack ice, skiing, ice fishing, fat biking on snow and ice; and of course, the chance to experience the Northern Lights from the island away from city lights.
“Our new lodge experience combines comfort with a traditional Swedish manor and an ethos of eco-travel that extends from the accommodation to all of the experiences,” adds Eric Schlemme co-owner of Jopikgården lodge. “The lodge gives guests the chance to really get away as a couple, family or group, and explore island life – Lapland style.”
For those looking for a more traditional arrival into Jopikgården lodge, it is also possible to meet your own team of dogs and take a husky ride out to the island.
Available from 18th December 2020 to 15th March 2021, a winter archipelago 4-day Arctic escape costs from 12750 sek per person, based on two travelling on a full board basis, not including flights.
This includes transfers, meals, additional winter clothing for all full guided tours with all of the equipment and instruction required; experienced guides, and all activities including snowshoeing, fire making, ice fishing, skiing, fat biking & dog sledging; and the chance to experience the Northern Lights.
