An Insight into The Kirkstyle Inn in Slaggyford, Northumberland

Northumberland is one of England’s true gems. It is home to incredible history and beautiful countryside. Exploring the best it has to offer requires more than a day, which is where places like the Kirkstyle Inn in Slaggyford come into play.

The Kirkstyle Inn is a highly acclaimed gastropub with four bedrooms located in the idyllic Northumberland village of Slaggyford. Although some might be thinking to themselves that Slaggyford is a name that must have been invented in the minds of people such as Ken Dodd or Michael Bentine, rest assured it is a real place! The village name likely has its origins in the Old English description for fast-moving river water that stirs up a river bed.

The inn has recently been nominated as a national finalist in two categories of the 2024 Great British Pub Awards (Best Country Pub and Best Pub for Food), which solidifies The Kirkstyle Inn’s reputation as one of Northumberland’s best pubs.

Situated in an enviable rural location on the banks of the South Tyne River, in a remote hamlet in the North Pennines AONB, this historic establishment has been given a fresh lease of life under the competent guidance of industry veteran Nick Parkinson.

Retaining character for the locals while improving culinary standards and creating an elegant escape for overnight guests was of the utmost importance.

Nick commented, “The recent GBPA finalist announcement in two categories further recognises the hard work and dedication of our team since The Kirkstyle Inn reopened its doors after a major refurbishment in February 2023.

“Within our opening year, we have achieved entry into the Michelin Guide 2024 and The Good Food Guide 2023, been awarded two AA Rosettes for culinary excellence, and received glowing reviews from our guests. It has been a remarkable first year.”

Head Chef Connor Wilson

The kitchen is run by local Chef Connor Wilson (above), who is as passionate about Northumberland as he is about cooking. His staunch focus on showcasing the finest produce from his home county and supporting the best local producers and farmers has led to the development of small and perfectly pitched seasonal menus with a sustainable farm-to-fork ethos at their very core.

Interior designer Emily Smoor from Fantoush was brought on board to create an ambient backdrop for the elegant dishes and an environment where guests will want to linger for longer. Emily used her eclectic style to create a fantastical escape for guests with a unique story for each room.

In addition to exceptional food and private dining, guests can be guided to experience more of the region’s highlights, including fishing trips, expert-led nature experiences, and wine and whisky tastings.
