Make the hot summer days extra delicious with the New KitchenAid Shave Ice Attachment. It’s the easy way to make moreish ‘I would like another’ drinks for the adults and tasty, refreshing desserts for the younger ones.
KitchenAid seems to be on a mission to make the hot summer days as fun and delicious as possible. A short while back, we had the pleasure of reviewing the renowned kitchen appliance makers’ Ice Cream Make Attachment, and now they have come out with something equally as cool!
Admittedly, we’re still waiting for the long, hot days to appear in England. However, as we all do in England, we share a faith sunnier days will be upon us soon, and it will be party time! Enjoying one garden in the summer is one of the most welcomed times of the year for most Brits. It is an opportunity to invite family and friends around to share some delicious food and drinks, and this is where KitchenAid and its new Shave Ice Attachment come to the forefront.
KitchenAid’s Shave Ice Attachment is not a standalone device. It will only work when fitted to the brand’s iconic 4.3L and 4.8L tilt-head mixer and the 6.9L bowl-lift mixer. This particular attachment has been designed to quickly and easily make more than 500ml of light and fluffy shaved ice in less than a minute.
The snow-like results it produces are incredibly versatile. You can use them to make delicious sweets and treats by adding flavours, ingredients and toppings, or you can pour in a chilled fruit syrup or a simple mix of pureed fruit (watermelon and blueberries are rather nice). Our recommendation (with health in mind) is to simply add some fresh juice for a delicious thirst-quenching drink. For those thinking this will be perfect for the younger ones, a little later in this piece, we’ll show how the adults can join in with the fun too!
KitchenAid’s Shave Ice Attachment comes with four ice moulds with a lid. You just need to fill the moulds with whatever liquid is freezable and position the pre-frozen block inside the attachment. In addition to this, the attachment has two blades; the fine blade is designed to create a cloud of snow, and the coarser blade is used to produce ice with a hand-shaved consistency.
Once you have frozen the liquid into ice, remove it from the mould and let it temper. The tempering allows the ice to reach the ideal shaving temperature of 18 to 20°F. Don’t worry if this sounds overly technical; it’s not. In simple terms, all you need to do is remove the ice block from the freezer and leave it to ‘air’ for about 10 to 15 minutes.
Once this is done, you’re pretty much ready to start. Load the ice block into the cup of the shave ice attachment, release the top lever and away you go! Once you’ve finished creating the ice you need, you just need to give it a clean, and the good news is it is dishwasher safe.
How to Make a Moscow Mule
This recipe is a twist on the classic; it is just as spicy and sweet but is twice as refreshing and served over shaved ice.
Prep Time: 20 (+ 12 – 24hr freezing time)
Cook Time: 30 mins
Ingredients:
- 1.05L water
- 250g caster sugar
- Two limes
- 4cm ginger
- 20 mint leaves
- 100ml vodka
- 300ml ginger beer
Method:
- Make the ice pucks. Pour 800ml of water into the plastic ice moulds and freeze for 12 – 24 hours.
- Make the syrup. Add the remaining 250ml water, caster sugar, juice of 2 limes, zest of 1 lime, julienned ginger and mint leaves to a saucepan. Bring to a boil, lower the heat and let simmer until the syrup has the consistency of maple syrup (about 30 minutes).
- Strain and let cool completely before transferring the syrup to a sealable bottle. Store in the fridge.
- Allow the ice pucks to rest at room temperature until the outside of the puck has a nice glossy sheen. Place the puck Into the KitchenAid Shave Ice Attachment, turn speed to 10 and shave the ice into a serving glass.
- Divide the vodka over the two glasses and add half of the ginger beer to them. Stir with a fork.
- Shave a second puck of ice in the glass. Top off with the remaining ginger beer until the glass is almost full. Drizzle some syrup on top to suit your preference.
- Garnish with a spring of mint, a slice of fresh lime and a dash of chilli pepper.
As we mentioned at the start of this feature, you’ll need one of the brand’s mixers to make it work. Earlier this year, we reviewed the KitchenAid Artisan 6.9L bowl-lift stand mixer; read why we think it deserves pride of place in your kitchen.
