KöD Soho will launch in mid-July based on the same successful format of its sister restaurant, KöD City, on Devonshire Square but with a few new additions and differences.
Behind the brand is London-based founding partner Morten P. Ortwed, who, along with five friends, launched KöD in Denmark in 2014 before expanding into Norway and moving to the UK to oversee the UK developments and launch KöD City in March 2023. James Durrant runs the kitchen operations for all UK KöD restaurants and previously worked for Gordon Ramsay Holdings and The Stafford Hotel.
Morten’s wife, Catrine Ortwed, is also heavily involved in the design for KöD Soho and will be a part of the restaurant management team when they open in July, making this business a family affair.
Morten’s hospitality career started waiting tables, but an opportunity to take on the franchise of a cafe, restaurant & nightclub with a group of friends in 2009 led to the creation of DiningSix, which now has eight successful brands, including 22 restaurants across several countries.
KöD City was the seventh opening under this brand name for the Danish group. There are currently three sites in Denmark – two in Copenhagen and one in Aarhus, as well as three Norway premises in Frogner and Posthallen, Oslo and another in Stavanger.
Not only has Morten brought a successful brand to London, but with it, he brings ‘the Danish way’ – an absence of hierarchy on the restaurant floor, meaning he is often found at the pass, waiting on tables or serving drinks. Seemingly, he’s doing something right as KöD London has become a desirable place of work and runs a waiting list for employment.
KöD City, on Devonshire Square, launched with little fanfare and has built up a loyal following, particularly for the (renowned in Denmark) Sunday Roast, which at £39 for limitless top quality steak is excellent value and an offering KöD Soho will replicate.
