With breathtaking views stretching over the Laikipia Plains to Mount Kenya, the Loisaba Tented Camp is a stunning addition to Kenya’s luxury safari stays
In the headline, you can probably guess that we’ve borrowed some lyrics from Toto’s chart-topping song Africa, these simple words encapsulate how we’ve felt when sampling the safari-based luxury retreats in Africa and what people should be feeling when their visit to Elewana’s Loisaba Tented Camp draws to an end.
Over the past ten years, we’ve seen the Africa continent strengthen it’s foothold in the high-end luxury travel market and this new Kenyan property is another great example of this.
Opened in May by luxury safari camp operator Elewana with the support of the Loisaba Conservancy and The Nature Conservancy, the camp has a dual purpose of developing tourism to this area of superb natural beauty and ensuring, through correct conservation practice, it remains just that.
Benefiting from a prime position in the 56,000 acre Loisaba conservancy, guests can enjoy picturesque landscapes and access to three ecosystems on their doorstep. As you would expect, the camp also provides access to view a plethora of exciting wildlife, including the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, leopard, cheetah, lion and elephant. Not only that, Loisaba is touted as one of the finest places to scout wild dog.
With just 16 rooms available at Loisaba, it offers one of the most exclusive safari experiences in Africa. In fact, even with a full house at Loisaba, there will still be 3,500 acres of wilderness per room, adding to the allure of this enticing retreat.
In such a remote area, the finest luxury trappings are still available. The camp’s Private Residence House, for example, is equipped with a private bar, dining area and an infinity pool. The latter of which offers the kind of awe-inspiring vistas that mark Loisaba out as one of the most stunning places on earth.
To take full advantage of these views day and night, guests can spend a night or two at the nearby Elewana Star Beds where they can enjoy sleeping under a star-filled sky. Having recently undergone a $150,000 refurbishment, there are four star beds available, including a ‘family’ star bed and a dining area equipped with a stargazing platform.
Despite the views, you won’t want to spend all your time lounging by the infinity pools. An exciting array of activities, such as bush walks, mountain biking, camel riding, lion tracking, horse riding, fishing, local village excursions, are available to guests.
After a day enjoying excursions Loisaba welcomes you back to a gourmet dining experience. The menu is mainly sourced from a 50km radius of the resort; not least from within Loisaba’s own gardens. Exquisite dishes are then crafted utilising the finest local commodities and you can expect to find plates as varied as deep fried brie with cucumber and mango pickle followed by pea and lemon risotto with grilled baby leeks and poached egg, or crispy pork belly with roasted beets, glazed baby onions and whole grain mustard sauce.
Such luxuries may seem at odds with a bid for environmental conservation, but the local nature of Loisaba’s dining experience is evocative of the camp’s ethos. With a commitment to limit their ecological footprint wherever possible, Elewana and its partners offer new-era luxury, where high-end experience provides invaluable support to the environment it operates in.
The introduction of a luxury camp to Loisaba generates critical benefits for neighbouring communities and wildlife. Factions that were once at odds are now living in more harmonious conditions. A critical sanctuary for the aforementioned wildlife and supporting one of Kenya’s most stable lion populations, Loisaba is a triumph of both luxury travel and conservation.
