Lanes of London is this property’s main eatery and is popular with guests as well as outside visitors looking to savour the distinctly British-themed cuisine.
It seats around 70 people at a time, and at the rear, there are frosted windows where you can vaguely see the chefs at work and the steam rising out of the many pots. The restaurant’s all-day à la carte menu is reasonably comprehensive, and so is the wine list, and there is plenty to address all tastes alongside any specific dietary requirements. For the starter, I opted for the beautifully laid out marinated salmon (£11) which was accompanied by some tangy wasabi, samphire, vinaigrette dots and cherry tomatoes. My partner tried the warm green asparagus (£12), which came with soft egg, truffle and hollandaise sauce, and was devoured with ease.
The main courses are dominated by meat and fish, and my heart was set on the sea bass with capers, lemon vinaigrette and young broccoli (£17). The crispy skin on the fish was married so well with the moist flesh and was a pleasure for the palate. The lamb rack with roasted baby potato, shallot confit, baby carrot and black olives jus that my wife sampled was tender and very nicely cooked. To go with these dishes, we picked sides of sautéed kale and spinach (£4) and a sumptuous portion of creamy herb and butter mash (£4).
With us being nearly defeated, and with very little room left, we ended up sharing a trio of sorbets which sat on a bed of crushed pistachios and blueberries. Garnished with delicate chocolate leaves, it was a brilliant end to what had been an impressive meal with excellent attentive service from start to finish.
In the morning, breakfast is served in both Lanes of London where there is a continental buffet and an à la carte menu with plenty of hot dishes, and the Executive Lounge, where there is a well-stocked buffet on display, but without the ability to order. Instead, there is a hot selection of cooked delicacies such as sausages and hash browns, alongside plates of cheese, smoked salmon, fruit and nuts, but there is no chance of going hungry here either.
To sum up this destination in a few words, this five-star hotel is brilliantly located, the service and gastronomy are excellent, the rooms are extremely comfortable, and the spa is one of the best we have tried in the Capital. It’s therefore, a must for domestic or international travellers alike who are looking for a luxurious stay in London.
