As the sun starts to set over London’s skies, I head to the Sky Garden, a spectacular spot where you can capture the full panorama of the city in all its urban beauty

Nestled at the top of a high-rise building within the banking district on Fenchurch Street, Sky Garden is currently the talk of the town that will literally take your dining experience to higher heights.

It already felt as if we were about to embark on an enthralling ride or get on a flight, as we filtered ourselves through high-security checks before reaching the lift to take us up to the 35th floor. In actual fact, tonight, we were being treated to sample the dinner menu at the Fenchurch Restaurant, eponymously named after the name of the building and the street it resides on.

First, we soaked up the surrounds of the lush botanical oasis set within this epic glass dome, with captivating views of the capital. We sauntered through the open plan bar area, decked out with cool lounge chairs and tables, observation deck and open-air terrace.

This is where the city folk flock to for an urban respite to wine and dine in, with its zen gardens but wholly welcoming, buzzy atmosphere.

British contemporary cuisine is what to expect at Fenchurch, with locally sourced ingredients such as Goodwood Estate lamb and of course, sitting down to the backdrop of such uninterrupted views. I started with a mellow seasonal cocktail called Hampstead Heath – Hendrick’s gin shaken up with St. Germain elderflower liqueur, cucumber, lemon and egg white, served in a martini glass and my guest enjoyed a French 37 – a fizzy champagne and gin tipple with rhubarb liqueur, lime and sugar.

Appetisers include fresh chopped mackerel with pickled cockles, sea herbs and oyster cream and the mains on the menu are equally vibrant and varied. Dishes to expect will be in the vein of Iberico pork with hispi cabbage, black pudding, apple and sage and soft flakes of Cornish turbot with smoked eel, bone marrow and leeks. Desserts are spot on for those with a sweet tooth; we tucked into a bitter chocolate fondant with banana ice-cream and honeycomb to finish off our feast.

To complement the food’s flavours, Fenchurch has also revamped its wine menu to showcase a list of over 300 new world and old world options. What’s more, the restaurant offers the Coravin wine pouring system, so you can enjoy exquisite glasses from top-notch vineyards without popping the cork and committing to the whole bottle.

Covered overhead come rain or shine and kitted out in full to tackle any occasion, this is the elegant way to dine 155 metres up in London.
