When you hear the word Mead, images of Monks imbibing come to mind. I am back to my trip to Lindisfarne, where I first heard and saw the production of the mystical drink. Loxwood Meadworks aiming to change peoples’ perceptions by bringing Mead into the modern era.
Loxwood Meadworks Pure Mead ironically came about through the hosting of a Medieval jousting event in West Sussex. Danny, the owner and creator, was selling Mead for The Loxwood Joust.
He saw people enjoying original Mead but wondered why it was only drunk at events such as the joust? He set about creating a modern Mead that can be enjoyed on any occasion.
Let me tell you about the production process, which turns pure honey into any alcoholic drink. The modern Pure Mead is fermented dry from 100% honey, then more honey is added to back-sweeten the alcohol producing a delicate sweetness.
I followed suggestions from the company on how best to drink their Pure Mead which is to chill it like a white Wine. So when my bottle arrived and after admiring the luxury look of the bottle, I put it in the fridge as I was eager to sample it that night.
It can be drunk like you would a wine. It’s great to share with friends for any occasion – from a warm summer’s day to a cosy night in with a cheeseboard. It doesn’t taste like a wine, but it is refreshing, has a light honey flavour and smooth finish.
I enjoy nature, planting trees, walking in the country and animal watching. Loxwood is acutely aware of the importance of the Bee population, and they depend on it. They work closely with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and their Bee Kind project. They are educating the public about the need to maintain a healthy Bee community around the world.
I was surprised by the Pure Mead, pleasantly I should add. The bottle looks premium like an expensive Champagne, with the taste of delicious honey sweetness. The price is excellent for the quality you get.
