Making sure my red-carpet-ready hair didn’t go to waste, my guest and I headed down for cocktails at Scarfes Bar.
Whiling away the hours at Scarfes Bar is easy – there’s live music seven nights a week and a cosy atmosphere. We stayed for three hours! Taking inspiration from a Gentleman’s Club, the décor is suave yet homely, with a huge open fire, velvet armchairs and hand-picked antique books lining the shelves.
The kooky cocktail menu – named ‘Potions’ – is a delight to flick through. It features iconic caricatures by Gerald Scarfe as the inspiration for each drink.
Our favourite cocktails included ‘Walking with a Waddle’; a more-ish mix of gin infused with vanilla, liquorice and cinnamon, with a sweet cherry cordial. It’s topped with a white meringue disk with a Charlie Chaplin stencil, whom the drink is inspired by. Another favourite was ‘The Nutcracker’; a twist on the popular Espresso Martini (I prefer this version), combining vodka and white vermouth with cold brew coconut coffee.
Breakfast was the perfect end 24 hours of R&R. We enjoyed a laid-back morning in the hotel’s swish Mirror Room. I chose ‘The Healthy’ breakfast which I imagine is popular with trendy east London locals. There’s an Acai bowl, a posh-looking smashed avocado on toast and a detox juice. I prolonged breakfast as long as I could, sipping on a slow-drip artisan coffee and nibbling warm, fluffy madeleines. When it was (regrettably) time to go, I reminded myself that there was one luxury I was leaving with; fabulous new hair.
