Simone Zeffiro looks into what makes Marco Massaccesi handbags so popular
Hand-built handbags by Italian designer Marco Massaccesi are wowing women around the world – and they can even watch their bespoke bags taking shape via the internet.
Marco, who set up his own business in 2002 after learning the fine leather trade in his father’s workshop, or atelier, believes in involving his clients in the process so allows them to suggest tweaks and changes from the other side of the globe while their bag is being made.
“We still belong to that world where designers were truly designers, where handbags were truly made by hand in authentic Italian workshops,” says Marco, who created the Massaccesi Handbags brand after working for the likes of Fendi, Gucci and Salvatore Ferragamo.
His limited-edition handbags are now exported worldwide and are particularly sought-after in Europe and the United States.
Unusually, perhaps, Marco chooses every single component of each handbag ordered to ensure his high standards are maintained, and customers ordering bespoke bags can choose from many sizes and styles.
His more recent creations include:
Stella – Marco’s first clutch, which is zip-up and has a removable pure brass chain. It comes with a soft dust bag, a new gray lining, crocodile embossing, and a choice of silver or light gold fittings. It’s available in stamped croco calf or Nappa.
Mini Zhoe – a chic smaller version of the original Zhoe and Zhoe Legend bags. Its choice of two removable leather straps and a polished chain means it can be used on your shoulder on an evening out or worn across your body during the day. The open interior has a rear zip pocket and a horizontal slip pocket large enough for a smartphone. It’s available in a natural flat calf or in stamped croco.
