Check-in happens casually in the comfort of your room with your thakaru – your main aide to ensure your stay runs smooth and stress-free. As the island is larger than others, free bikes are given to guests so you can cycle round at your leisure.
Ours were kitted with our names engraved onto wooden plaques, later becoming sweet mementos of our trip to cherish. Buggies are also on hand for when it gets dark and you’re ready to dine.
You’ll be spoilt for choice with the variety of cuisine Niyama has to offer. Catering to clients who visit from all over the world, the daily breakfast buffet ranges from huevos rancheros – eggs the Mexican way – to Chinese stir fries and fish broths, to Maldivian curries, Arabic platters and classic continental spreads including fresh fruit and juices.
Try Thai dining up in the treetops at Nest, literally nestled within the lush tropical vegetation at the ‘Play’ part of the island, so you feel as if you’re in the heart of a rainforest, offering teppanyaki (Japanese grill) downstairs and moreish Tom Yum soup along with other Thai favourites and dishes with Niyama twists upstairs.
For an evening to remember, take the 10-minute boat trip to the overwater restaurant, Edge and dance the night away while watching fish swim around the coral reef at the resort’s very own underwater night club called Subsix, where they host a buzzy ‘Glow Party’ with neon face paints, glow-sticks and cocktails to keep the grown ups fully entertained. At Edge, we enjoyed a delicious four-course menu on the pontoon where you can hear the gentle lapping of ocean waves and view a star-studded night sky. And if this all doesn’t tickle your taste buds, there’s also private dining, BBQs on the beach, buffets with a daily change in cuisine type and so much more.
Whether you’re active explorers, spa-lovers, foodies, partygoers, honeymooners or a family who expects all the frills, Niyama is the Maldivian playground that everyone can enjoy.
