Twenty-twenty-three is a special year for the much-loved Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, as it marks sixty years from when it first opened its doors to guests. Since January, the hotel has been hosting events and implementing many new initiatives to commemorate its past and in this feature, we look at some of them.
Although the 60th-anniversary gala, which takes place on the 26th of October, will be one of the hotel’s biggest celebrations in recent years, before then, it is hosting a range of initiatives to mark the milestone.
Below, we look at some of the things guests can experience now at the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong.
Clipper Lounge
Fondly referred to as “Hong Kong’s sitting room”, Clipper Lounge will offer a special 60th-anniversary classic Afternoon Tea paying homage to the traditional Afternoon tea ritual introduced in Britain in the early 1840s.
On offer are classic British desserts such as the signature 1963 Mandarin cheesecake, Black Forest Cake, Lemon Meringue Tart and Vanilla Cream Horn, as well as finger sandwiches such as Roasted Prime Rib of Beef with Horseradish Cream and Coronation Chicken. And, of course, there will be plain and raisin scones served with the lounge’s much-loved rose petal jam.
Captain’s Bar
The bar has entertained Hong Kong for 60 years and established itself as one of the best places to head to after work. Here, guests can enjoy draught beer, including local Hong Kong beer served in silver tankers, while enjoying its timeless charm. Queen Andreen, a talented jazz vocalist from Barbados who has been entertaining audiences worldwide, will provide live entertainment on Sunday, Tuesday and Saturday.
As part of the 60th anniversary celebration, the Captain’s Bar has introduced Captain’s Hour from Sunday to Wednesday from 8-10 p.m., allowing guests to enjoy a 50% discount on a second silver tanker draught beer.
Man Wah
Known for its traditional favourites, the One-Michelin-star Cantonese restaurant has specially curated a classic menu featuring traditional Chinese dishes with a flair.
Available from the 3rd of October until the end of the month, guests can sample elevated classic dishes such as Double-boiled sea conch soup, bamboo pith red date and cordyceps, Sauteed lobster in superior fish broth and Braised chicken in casserole with abalone and sun-dried shrimps. The exquisite and delicate eight-course dinner menu is priced at HKD2,088* per person.
On 28-29 October, Man Wah will host Chef Fei from Two-Michelin-Starred Jiang by Chef Fei from Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou, for a 4-hand collaboration. He is known for his creative Cantonese cuisine that crafts innovative dishes from simple yet premium seasonal ingredients. The 6-course lunch menu will be priced at HK988* per person, and the 7-course dinner menu will be priced at HKD2,388* per person.
Mandarin Grill + Bar
Led by Chef de Cuisine Matthew Reuther, the One-Michelin-star restaurant, which has retained its Michelin star since 2009 for 15 consecutive years, will also put up a 60th Anniversary menu with classic and much-loved recipes. Guests can enjoy Lobster Bisque and Beef Tartare and a classic French recipe, Oeufs en Meurette, poached eggs in a red wine sauce from Burgundy.
Guests can also savour a classic Pithiver with duck breasts, a perfect dish for two diners to share with a classic 1963 Mandarin Cheesecake as the perfect ending note. The 60th Anniversary menu is priced at HKD1,963* per person.
Spa & Wellness
Partnering with the pioneering luxury skincare brand 111SKIN earlier this year, The award-winning The Mandarin Spa will offer the Celestial Black Diamond Sculpting Body Treatment at a special rate of HKD1,963 until the end of November to celebrate the hotel’s 60th Anniversary.
Celestial Black Diamond Sculpting Treatment (90 minutes)
The treatment is designed to lift, tighten and nourish. It is an opulent and indulgent body treatment that delivers dramatic results, helping to shape, smooth and saturate the skin through nourishment. It also incorporates massage techniques and potent professional formulas, which results in a smoother, sculpted and more radiant-looking figure.
The 60th Anniversary Limited Edition Chinaware Collection
Veteran Hong Kong designer Alan Chan originally designed the Chinaware, which displays the iconic print of the Mandarin Oriental teahouse that has been synonymous with the unique packaging of The Mandarin Oriental Cake Shop since 2006.
