A National Dental Survey shows that straighter teeth are still a priority. Somewhat surprisingly, the survey also revealed that as many as 1 in 5 have had issues with online clear aligner solutions, prompting many to consider more traditional types of braces.
Dr Imran Sayed, a leading dentist and partner at Chelsea & Fulham Dentist, recently published a National Dental Survey that sheds light on the dental health practices of the UK public.
The survey highlights how many people in the UK have had issues with online services offering teeth straightening solutions and how this is causing a resurgence in more traditional metal braces, driven by their effectiveness, affordability, and reliability.
The results showed that nearly half (46%) of the UK population are unhappy with their teeth, which greatly impacts confidence. A staggering 39% of those surveyed openly admitted they would feel more confident with an improved smile.
A fifth (20%) of the UK public would like straighter teeth, and in recent years, many have turned to online teeth straightening services that offer clear aligners delivered through the post.
Many of the firms offering this solution state they can straighten teeth ‘faster’ and ‘cheaper’ than traditional braces; however, according to the survey, 18% have had issues using these services, and only 10% said they were actually easier than visiting a dentist in the long run.
These concerns and issues with clear aligners, along with a new trend among celebrities and influencers using metal braces, have seen a resurgence in this more traditional choice.
Dr Imran Sayed explained why they are becoming more popular, “Metal braces often achieve faster results and provide dentists with greater control over tooth movement compared to clear aligners.
“Unlike clear aligners, which require disciplined wear for effective results, metal braces are fixed and work continuously. Also, metal braces are generally cheaper, ranging from £1,500 to £3,500, while Invisalign aligners range from £2,000 to £4,500 due to their customisation and convenience.”
While metal braces are highly effective, they are not without their downsides. “Metal braces may cause a bit more discomfort and soreness, especially after adjustments,” acknowledges Dr. Sayed, “However, the long-term benefits and reliability often outweigh these minor inconveniences.”
