Portugal’s Octant Furnas, a wellness and design-led retreat located in the heart of Furnas in the Azores, has announced its reclassification as a five-star hotel. The Azores Regional Directorate of Tourism awarded the five-star classification for the retreat’s ongoing commitment to excellence and high-quality service.
The hotel, which was created through the restoration of the former Furnas Thermal Centre, stands out for its innovative architecture, seamlessly blending contemporary design with the natural beauty of the volcanic landscape.
Octant Furnas offers 55 rooms and suites, including double and single rooms and suites with private pools, plus an exceptional restaurant, inviting bars, a revitalising spa, and thermal pools with volcanic spring waters.
“This reclassification is the result of hard work and dedication by the entire Octant Furnas team. We are incredibly proud to reach this milestone and reaffirm our commitment to continuing to exceed our guests’ expectations by providing authentic and unforgettable experiences in Furnas,” said Nuno Sequeira, General Manager of Octant Furnas.
The 5-star classification highlights Octant Furnas’ commitment to offering luxury accommodation with elegantly designed rooms and suites, breathtaking views, and state-of-the-art amenities. This is complemented by a distinctive culinary experience where fresh, locally sourced ingredients showcase the authentic flavours of the region.
The Azores’ unique volcanic origins make the islands a thermal paradise, featuring iron-rich pools tucked amongst tropical foliage and natural ocean pools. The island of Säo Miguel was shaped by the volcanic eruption of 1630, with activity beneath the surface heating the groundwater and forming an exceptional array of mineral hot springs.
Situated in the heart of Furnas Valley, where Säo Miguel’s distinctive geothermal activity takes centre stage, Octant Furnas offers relaxation and incredible natural wonders.
Seamlessly integrating with the natural surroundings, the hotel harnesses the island’s medicinal properties at the Thermal Spa Centre. Indoor and outdoor pools use water from nearby geothermal springs, with heat recycled and used in other areas of the hotel, while spa treatments utilise mineral-rich water to treat skin conditions and other ailments such as rheumatism.
The natural thermal bath circuit, with iron-rich water up to 40 degrees Celsius, is complemented by aromatic showers, a Turkish bath, and saunas.
In addition to its unique spa offerings, Octant Furnas invites guests to experience its signature dining experience, Cozido à TERRA. Cooked naturally at high temperatures over the natural springs, in a celebration of local culinary traditions, the Portuguese stew offers a journey through the island’s history, from north to south.
Moreover, guests can savour a selection of local volcanic wines where grapes are fermented on volcanic soil, enhancing their distinct flavours and characteristics.
Nightly rates start from £310 B&B and include spa access.
