Oversea Seafood – A Unique Tank to Table Dining Experience in Kuala Lumpur

Ong Chin Huat gets a first taste of the new Oversea Seafood Restaurant, an extraordinary eatery in Kuala Lumpur that is literally making waves in the F&B scene.

With six branches in Malaysia, the Oversea Group has recently added another feather on its well-decorated cap with the launch of Oversea Seafood in Kuala Lumpur.

Located adjoining the Royal Selangor Golf Club, Oversea Seafood offers gourmands and seafood aficionados an immersive dining experience from the moment they enter this spacious seafood mecca.

A ceiling feature in the lobby depicting an underwater scene complete with manta rays and orca whales sets the tone for any visitor while nautical accents like wood oars, anchors and weathered wood panels evoke a seafaring ambience.

Giant octopus tentacles wind around the staircase’s railing, ushering guests to 28 private rooms.

Completely pork-free to cater to local taste, Oversea Seafood’s appeal lies in its live and fresh seafood, which the diners can see for themselves as they walk past a series of fish tanks housing live seafood.

No shellfish is left unturned in this seafood paradise, from Australian lobsters to the highly touted Empurau fish. Guests are invited to pick and choose their own seafood, which is then placed in a bag, hung on a hook with a motorised conveyor belt above, and carted off into the kitchen to be cooked, giving credence to the restaurant’s Tank to Table slogan.

For those who prefer dishes other than those found in the sea, the delectable menu also offers a selection of dishes that include meat and poultry.

Starting with the Double Boiled Village Chicken with Dried Scallop Soup, which had the correct consistency and was nourishing and satisfying, the Steamed French Turbot Fish with Chili and Superior Soy Sauce followed next.

The House Special Giant Freshwater Prawn (above) was crunchy to the bite with a sauce that added an extra oomph.

The Indonesian Mud Crabs with Chili, served with delicious Mini Croissants, were the pièce de résistance, stealing the show for most of the guests.

Spicy to the correct degree, the crab meat was succulent and juicy and the mini croissant added a sophisticated touch and went delightfully well with the sauce.

Steamed Japanese Scallop With Garlic And Vermicelli

The Steamed Japanese Scallop with Garlic and Vermicelli served on a piece of shell provided a nice respite after the aromatic prawns and crabs, while the Black Truffle fried Rice with Japanese Scallop came at the right time when most were craving a little carbohydrate!

Before leaving, I’d recommend all diners visit the restrooms if only to admire the extraordinary sea-themed décor. Mirrors festooned with seashells, underwater scenes in colourful mosaic art, crystal countertops lit from within and clamshell basins would make anyone feel like they had just walked out from the Disney movie set of Little Mermaid!
