Quench Sea is a groundbreaking £47, portable, handheld device that instantly turns seawater into fresh drinking water – and weighs less than a bag of sugar and it is now available to pre-order from Indiegogo.
What would Tom Hanks in the blockbuster movie Castaway have given for something that could turn seawater into fresh drinking water? Just the thought of making fresh water from seawater boggles the mind. It’s even more incredible when you factor in that the product capable of doing this, the Quench Sea is priced at under £50.
We love innovation at Luxurious Magazine, particularly products that can help to make the world a better place. The Quench Sea device fits that bill perfectly, and we’re not the only ones thinking this. The head of a leading water aid charity described it as “a profoundly significant invention”. This small device truly has the ability to make a huge difference in this world.
When you read what The Sea Quench is capable of, aside from the impact it can have on lives around the world. You can also envisage it being an essential part of any seafarers kitbag, outdoor adventurers, preppers, and so much more.
What is Sea Quench?
Quench Sea is the world’s only low-cost portable seawater desalination device. It’s capable of making up to two litres of palatable water per hour, all through a manual handle-powered unit that fits into a small bag.
It provides an affordable, convenient and safe alternative to boiling seawater in an emergency situation. Users simply pump it for as long as they need, in order to provide the volume of clean water they want. You can watch how it works here and an independent verification video here.
As well as for humanitarian use, Quench Sea is also the ideal companion for outdoor enthusiasts – from sailors to campers and survivalists to travellers. The product is hard wearing and reusable, with only the filters needing to be replaced (the time period varies due to usage) – this will cost around £7.85.
Every Quench Sea order will also help to save the lives of others across the world in one of two ways. Each full price purchase will see the company provide one additional device for use by humanitarian clean water partners, as part of its ambitious vision to solve the global water crisis. Those who don’t need one personally can also choose to donate £25 on Indiegogo towards the cost of a single device, and the company will pass this device onto its partners.
With two-thirds of the world’s population living in areas plagued by water scarcity and more than two billion people without access to clean water, the company hopes its device donations can go some way to easing this humanitarian crisis. Currently, it is a huge and expensive logistical challenge that involves shipping and distributing millions of bottles of water, and even then, efforts can fail to meet demand as more than seven million people die from a water-related disease each year.
The IndieGoGo campaign is phase one of the company’s mission to donate 100 million units for humanitarian efforts by 2027. To reach the economies of scale needed to ramp up production and make a significant dent in the water crisis, the company has ambitions to sell one million full-price units during this first 30-day pre-order phase. However, it only needs to raise $50,000 to begin full production.
Ordering and pricing
Quench Sea is open now for pre-orders in one of two ways through crowdfunding platform Indiegogo. You can watch how it works here.
Order Quench Sea for personal use at the discounted retail price of £47 and Quench Sea will donate an additional unit for humanitarian causes. Retail price after the initial 30-day campaign will be £54.96. Make a pledge of £25 towards a Quench Sea device to be donated for humanitarian use on your behalf.
For the next 30 days, it can be purchased from Indiegogo at the reduced price of £25 (rather than the full retail cost of £54.96) with delivery expected in February 2021.
How does the Sea Quench work?
Quench Sea is a device that combines a hydraulic system, triple pre-filtration and a small reverse osmosis membrane to desalinate seawater into freshwater using manual human power. At sea or on the coast, it converts seawater into clean, fresh drinking water instantly.
Quench Sea has an inbuilt ultrafiltration and microfiltration system to remove suspended solids, bacteria, viruses, parasites and microplastics. The first sediment filtration removes the most damaging sediments and particles. Seawater is then forced under pressure through a 0.01-micron membrane removing all contaminants before the final reverse osmosis process.
Reverse Osmosis
Quench Sea uses an advanced and state-of-the-art industrial Reverse Osmosis membrane. Seawater is demineralised under 55 bar to 60 bar (6000 kPa) pressure through a semipermeable membrane. RO membranes contain small pores small enough to pass pure water through while rejecting larger molecules such as dissolved salts (ions) and other impurities such as bacteria to produce highly purified water for drinking.
Activated Carbon Filter
Through the process of adsorption, an advanced activated carbon filter ensures that the taste of water is palatable, and the odour of water is pleasant.
Hydraulic System
A unique hydraulic system builds pressure to 60 bars (6,000 kPa) to remove salts from seawater through a reverse osmosis membrane.
