Wanting to soak up the atmosphere (and the weather) outside, Nita and I ventured on to the terrace to enjoy a cocktail or two before grabbing a bite to eat. Bamboo Door, Aagrah, Tropiero and Cubana are just a handful of bars and eateries offering al fresco drinking and dining on the square. In the mood for some Spanish tapas, Cubana felt like a natural choice.
The electric vibe continues inside this place as it did outside. The downstairs area is reserved for those wishing to just drink, while the upstairs offers diners a little more privacy to enjoy tapas. And that we did. Having made a selection of chicken, lamb fish and veg dishes, it was good to be served the dishes two at a time. That way it was easier to taste the tapas without mixing the flavours.
They were seriously good but it was the “Calamares a la Andaluza”, lightly fried, crispy squid cooked to perfection sprinkled with a touch of sliced red and green chilli, that hit the spot for me.
Breakfast is a relaxed leisurely affair here at the hotel with a good buffet selection and hot food made to order. But with afternoon tea looming at midday, we decided to save ourselves for that.
Offering three types of afternoon tea – Leopold, cream and traditional – you won’t be going hungry. We took ours on the terrace overlooking the square which was in a much calmer state from the night before.
Served on the traditional three-tier silver stand, there was enough for at least four people. Still, that didn’t deter us from devouring pretty much the whole lot, all washed down with a good pot of English breakfast tea. And that is how to end a sophisticated trip of eating, drinking and partying in Sheffield.
