Over the past four years, Silentnight has reduced its carbon emissions by 49% but realises there is more to do. Using science, it has set new targets, reducing its emissions by a further 53.6% by 2030 under scopes one and two of the SBTi review, along with reducing carbon emissions from purchased goods and services by 28%.
Silentnight is probably the UK’s best-known sleep brand, so it will always have to lead by example. The company has announced it will be strengthening its sustainability credentials by setting science-based targets that will see it more than halve its current emissions by 2030. It is a lofty move that shows that the sleep brand means business.
During the past six months, Silentnight has looked at all emissions throughout its business to help it become net zero carbon by 2040. This has enabled them to set new ambitious targets that have been validated and reviewed by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
Under scopes one and two of the SBTi review, which looks at business operations, Silentnight will seek to reduce carbon emissions by 53.6 per cent by 2030. Under scope three of the review, which looks at supplier operations, the brand also commits to reducing carbon emissions from purchased goods and services by 28 per cent within the same time frame.
Silentnight will achieve these targets by implementing best practices across all operational processes, including procurement, supply chain, waste management, investment, and innovation.
Earlier this year, the sleep brand became a signatory of The Climate Pledge and has already achieved its carbon-neutral PLUS status, offsetting more carbon than it produced last year. In addition, the sleep brand has implemented further carbon reduction initiatives to reduce its emissions by almost 49 per cent in the past four years.
Angela Moran, ESG Director at Silentnight, said: “Silentnight has been working hard to ensure we are market leaders for sleep brands when it comes to reducing carbon emissions. We’re continuing to set targets which comply with the criteria by SBTi to meet approval standards. We look forward to announcing further developments about the commitment and sustainability in the future.”
Not stopping at its commitments as a business, Silentnight has a fantastic bed range which is ideal for planet savers. The Silentnight Eco Comfort Collection features a range of mattresses which are designed for deconstruction to reduce the waste that ends up in the landfill significantly.
Similarly, every mattress in the Silentnight Eco Comfort Collection is comprised of eco-comfort fibres made from recycled plastic waste. The equivalent of a staggering 450 million plastic bottles is used in Silentnight’s eco mattresses and top-of-bed products each year.
The sleep brand has supported the work of the Marine Conservation Society since 2018 and has helped Beach Clean events to collect plastic waste that would ultimately end up in our oceans.
Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a company which mobilises brands to set science-based targets and boost their competitive advantage in the transition to the low-carbon economy.
The initiative focuses on four key topics – building technical foundations, scales-up adoption, conducting independent assessments and institutionalises SBTs, all whilst offering guidance to reduce barriers to adapt and independently assess and improve the targets listed by companies.
