Spectators at the 35th-anniversary edition of the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz, which will take place from 25 to 27 January 2019, can look forward to a breathtaking performance of the Sardhadchi cavalry team.
The equine artists from Azerbaijan, who are appearing in Switzerland for the first time, are all set to thrill the audience with their acrobatic show, to be held both on Saturday and Sunday. There is news on the team front as well: team line-ups have changed with new players signed up. The organisers of the world’s most prestigious high-goal polo tournament, a fixture in the St Moritz winter calendar, held every last weekend in January, are expecting a crowd of 15,000.
On Saturday and Sunday, visitors at the Snow Polo World Cup 2019 will be able to enjoy an exceptional highlight. The twelve-man Sarhadchi cavalry team should not fail to captivate the audience on the frozen Lake St. Moritz with an outstanding show on thoroughbred Karabakh horses. Since the team came together in 2012, it has been performing at world-class international events regularly. They appeared at Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday celebration, no less, where they presented their gripping show Land of Fire Azerbaijan. The Sarhadchi cavalry team is performing on the frozen lake in honour of the 35th anniversary of the Snow Polo World Cup St Moritz.
New team lineups, additional players
Grant Ganzi, making his debut at the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz, will captain the Cartier Team, as announced. New to the team is his father, Marc Ganzi. Also playing at his side are old hand Tito Gaudenzi (SUI) and polo superstar Juan Martin Nero (ARG), nine-times winner of the prestigious “Argentine Open” and one of the top three players worldwide. The Argentine Adrian Laplacette Jr. will be playing for Team Azerbaijan Land of Fire, like last year, and so will Elcin Jamalli. Isidro Strada, also from Argentina, and Agustin Kronhaus (ARG/AZE) will now be completing the team.
Formidable player Alejandro Novillo Astrada (ARG) will be playing for Badrutt’s Palace Hotel team captain Melissa Ganzi on her fourth tournament as planned. Juan Bautista Peluso and Alfredo Bigatti, who both played at this year’s “Argentine Open”, will be completing the team. Zhanna Bandurko (RUS) will, as previously announced, head up the Team Maserati for the second time in a row. And, also unchanged, she will be able to count on the support of Chris Hyde, Max Charlton (both ENG), and Robert Strom (FRA).
The world’s first snow polo field
Undisputedly the world’s first and foremost ‘high goal’ tournament on snow, the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz is legendary. It comes as no surprise, then, that year upon year the event attracts some of the world’s best polo players. No one wants to miss out on this unique experience to play at 1,800 metres above sea level and compete for the coveted Cartier Trophy.
The games at the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz will no doubt be firstrate. But so will the social side of the event: guests from around the globe and locals mingle in the tented village on Lake St. Moritz and the many hotels of the winter sports destination – for decades, the polo weekend at the end of January has been one of the social highlights of the St. Moritz winter season.
Reto Gaudenzi, founder and CEO of the tournament, comments: “Year upon year, we invest a tremendous amount of time and energy to create the best possible conditions for both players and polo ponies. And, of course, we are always looking out for new attractions. If we did not make this effort, we would not be able to present such captivating polo matches and such a fantastic social programme of a superb level to our 15,000 spectators who come from around the world.”
