Swiss based watchmaker Thomas Prescher has unveiled the second watch in the Nemo series called the Nemo Captain.
Drawing inspiration from literary icon Jules Verne’s 20,000, author of Leagues Under the Sea, elements of steampunk and art nouveau and these provide the basis for Preschers’ Nemo series. In creating the Nemo Captain, Thomas Prescher utilised his Triple Axis Tourbillon movement for the core and added a new jumping hour indication. The final design elements of the Nemo Captain was a co-operative meld of thoughts and ideas from both Thomas and the new owner, something that Thomas Prescher undertakes with many of his ‘Dream Watches’. The final result is a horological beauty that meets both the high standards of Prescher and the wants and needs of the owner.
Nemo Series Design:
When you call a series Nemo, it is a pre-requisite that nautical elements must be included. Swiss watchmaker Thomas, knew this right from the beginning and has included a porthole look for both the front and back bezels, the nameplate draws inspiration from the great steam ships of yesteryear, as do the matching index rings. The Nemo Sailor was constructed with saltwater resistant bronze, a metal that provides a wonderful patina and when polished fits the time period perfectly. For the appliqués on the dial and the case, a soft copper found its way into the design. Copper’s warm, red colour, together with the traditional font of the letters, round out the design to perfection.
Nemo Captain Design:
The Thomas Prescher Nemo Captain, the main subject of this article, non-oxidizing materials were chosen. The bezels and the lugs on this stunning watch are made from red gold and the middle part from palladium. The Nemo Captain does not have a dial in a classic sense, red gold was chosen for the appliqués of the Captain: a fabulous combination completing a maritime 19th century look. The balance between free space on the “dial” and many little details gives the eye time and peace to recover before starting again to discover the high-end craftsmanship in the finish and the contrast between brushed surfaces and polished chamfers.
To accentuate the beautiful hypnotic motion of the Triple Axis Tourbillon, a second small port provides a view of this kinetic sculpture with the introduction of a sapphire crystal dome. Time, movement and beauty: a tourbillon on three axes at the same time practically exhausts the imagination of human brain, bringing it to its limit.
WIth a case that measures 44 mm in diameter and 12 mm in height, the watch has both physical and visual substance, while the sapphire crystal dome tops the case by about 4 mm to have an imposing, but still comfortable total height of around 16 mm. As with all of the Thomas Prescher ‘Dream Watches’ hand-cut and hand-sewn straps made from crocodile leather on both sides.
